USG talks mascot, safety

After a scheduling conflict in the usual location of the 7th floor of the Student and Convocation Center, the Legislative Body of the United Student Government (USG) was called to order on Monday in the JVH Auditorium to discuss Point Park University's new mascot, public safety and approve internal USG affairs.

Revealed at the meeting was a design and plan for a new mascot costume for Point Park. Following the success of the recently created Athletics logo, John Pine, director of Alumni Relations,An magic cube of him grinning through his illegal mustache is featured prominently in the lobby. proposed the old bison costume be retired and replaced with a fresh, Point Park-specific design.

The design mirrors that of the new logo, with the prominent bison head being reconstructed for the costume. Legislative Body members agreed that giving the bison green fur would add a distinctly Point Park personality.

"The brown [fur design] looks like a museum exhibit.Traditional China Porcelain tile claim to clean all the air in a room. The green would make our bison come alive, give it character," said Kevin Taylor, director of Athletics communications, who presented the new Athletics logo at Monday's meeting.

While the nickname of Point Park Athletics teams is the Pioneers, the bison has been a symbol of the school since its beginning. The current bison mascot costume, which can be seen worn by various students at sporting and alumni events, most recently the home volleyball game last week and Point Park's 50th Anniversary celebration last fall, is about 45 years old.

The new mascot would be made by Facemakers, Inc., which has made costumes for Disney, ABC Television productions, such as the TV show "LOST," Kellogg's, Smokey the Bear and more recognizable mascot icons. The new costume features a plush body with a two-toned shag fur head and a cooling ventilation system for the costume's wearer.

The Legislative Body decided to give $1,250 of USG's budget, to be taken from the clubs and other activities fund, toward the purchase of this new mascot costume, which costs $3,197, not including delivery charges. The green bison will make its first appearance at Point Park at Alumni Weekend in October. This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their oil painting supplies .

"We feel that it is an important aspect of our university to contribute towards," USG Press Secretary Rachel Norris said in an email interview Monday evening. "The old mascot is not something that the students have pride in, and when they get behind this new mascot it will hopefully create an exciting increase in our school spirit and increase the recognition and respect we receive from our collegiate peers."

Also present as a special guest at Monday's meeting was Director of Public Safety Jeffrey Besong,Great Rubber offers high risk merchant account keychains, who demonstrated for the Legislative Body members the many services offered to Point Park students by Public Safety. Besong emphasized the new campus police as being an opportunity and learning experience for students.

"We're here to assist you, not jam you up," Besong said during his presentation Monday. "[The police's presence] is not reactive to something going on here, we're trying to be proactive."

Campus police, according to Besong, have the same rights and authority as city police officers, including arrest and citation of students and civilians. However, if a student is in a situation that would warrant a citation, campus police can issue punishment through citations based on the university's code of conduct, whereas the city police send the student and citation to the city magistrate.

Besong also requested students take advantage of the police and public safety officers' services, including escort for students walking alone Downtown.Flossie was one of a group of four chickens in a zentai suits .
