Following much research, many interviews and calculations, Kuhles set out with his local Chinese guides. After several days of intense jungle trekking and dangerous river crossings, the team arrived as a junction of several mountain streams. There the guides pointed to the distant summit ridge of the mountain, indicating the location of the aircraft wreckage, then stated that it was too dangerous to continue farther up the mountain and insisted on ending the expedition.

Nazmi Gur, a legislator from Van, was at his nephew's funeral when the quake struck. The funeral ceremony was cut short and he rushed back to help with rescues.

"At least six buildings had collapsed. We managed to rescue a few people, but I saw at least five bodies," Gur told The Associated Press by telephone. "There is no coordinated rescue at the moment, everyone is doing what they can."

"It was such a powerful temblor. It lasted for such a long time," Gur said. "(Now) there is no electricity, there is no heating, everyone is outside in the cold."

Many residents fled Van to seek shelter with relatives in nearby villages.

"I am taking my family to our village, our house was fine but there were cracks in our office building," Sahabettin Ozer, 47, said by telephone as he drove to the village of Muradiye.

NTV said Van's airport was damaged and planes were being diverted to neighboring cities.

Authorities had no information yet on remote villages but the governor was touring the region by helicopter and the government sent in tents, field kitchens and blankets. Some in Ercis reported shortages of bread, Turkey's staple food, due to damages to bakeries.

Houses also collapsed in the province of Bitlis, where an 8-year-old girl was killed, authorities said, and the quake toppled the minarets of two mosques in the nearby province of Mus.

There was no immediate information about a recently restored 10th century Armenian church, Akdamar Church, which is perched on a rocky island in the nearby Lake Van.

Abington couple charged with 'horrific' child abuse

Described by authorities as a “horrific” case of alleged child abuse and neglect, an Abington woman and her ex-boyfriend face various charges in connection with the “violent trauma” suffered by an infant boy in their care.

Colleen Melissa Miller, 31, allegedly left the child, for whom she was caring, alone with her former boyfriend, John Matthew O’Neill, even though she had a protection order against O’Neill, and then didn’t seek immediate medical care for the child when she returned home from a night of drinking and discovered the child suffered serious injuries to his anus, allegedly at the hands of O’Neill.

I was on my way to see Coming Full Circle, an exhibition of new works by Alex Janvier, one of Canada’s most influential and highly regarded artists.

It was also a celebration — a symbolic sod turning accompanied with drumming and song — to herald the new Janvier Gallery being constructed on the Cold Lake First Nations, a unique and enviable venture for any artist.

Sitting in the car I remembered my previous life-shaping-moment in Cold Lake.

One of those mighty moments for me was my first visit to Cold Lake (located four hours northeast of the city) five-and-a-half years ago. Accompanied by a CBC cameraman, I interviewed Janvier and showcased his art. This meet-up would be a profound and memorable experience; his words would linger in my mind years later and I would break into a giggle recalling a round of his good-hearted teasing.

Janvier has a presence that fills a room. Perhaps, not a surprise considering Morning Star, one of his greatest achievements, spans 418 square meters across the domed ceiling of the Grand Hall in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec on the banks of the Ottawa River across from Parliament Hill. The mural — a whopping 19 meters in diameter — was painted while Janvier, and his son Dean who assisted him, lay prone seven stories above the granite floor. The vibrant abstract, hailed a masterpiece by many, was started in June 1993 and completed five months later. It features Janvier’s signature style: fine, curvaceous lines and sensuous ribbons of flowing colour.

For three days Janvier talked about his life and his art. We wandered through his studio, a log cabin on the Cold Lake First Nations, amid a muddle of paints, brushes and canvases,then used cut pieces of Ceramic tile garden hose to get through the electric fence. bright cloth ribbons garnishing a wall of windows facing the woods to deter feathered friends.

History and story resided here along with a wealth of creativity. Two hats, once belonging to Bill Reid and Dale Auger, hung on pegs near the door,Polycore porcelain tiles are manufactured as a single sheet, a legacy of these much-admired Aboriginal artists and a reminder of the friendship they shared with Janvier.

There was a stream of stories, recounting the inspiration and root of his works and covering a lot of emotional territory: being taken from his family as a child and sent to Blue Quills Indian Residential School near St. Paul, Alberta; his disdain of the flagrant corruption of land for oil and greed; and conquering a bout with Bell’s palsy. The road map of his being was all there, traced on the painted canvas’ hanging on the walls.

“My painting is really a visual life story of what I have seen,” he shared.

Meals were shared, along with his wife Jacqueline, each inevitably morphing into a lively exchange of ideas, philosophies and spirited debate ending with a quest for answers; solutions to the plethora of environmental wrongdoings and the ongoing struggle Aboriginal peoples’ face today.

And there were hefty bouts of laughter, weaving in and out of these intricate talks of life and art … the joking and ribbing never stopped. On our first day together, the soft-spoken artist informed me that the correct pronunciation of Janvier is anglicized, not French.

“I’m native not French,” he said with a grin.

Yes, I was delighted to head back to Cold Lake.

Coming Full Circle aptly describes Janvier’s new works while acknowledging the new gallery scheduled to open the spring of 2012. The works themselves are painted on round-shaped canvases, embracing the drum (believed to convey the heartbeat of Mother Earth); and the medicine wheel embodying balance, harmony and interconnectedness, all integral symbols in First Nation’s culture.

“I think life itself is a complete circle,” he muses. “You start with birth and then you make the round and with death you are reborn in the spirit world. Nature teaches us how to think.”

“Coming Full Circle is really our native effort in the art world in Canada. We were isolated, even by Canada Council,” says Janvier referring to an incident in 1965 where the response to his grant inquiry was: “I’m sorry but you are not a tax payer.”

Central High Building Project In Trouble

Another Guilford County Schools construction program has gone off the rails, during the same week the school system released a 10-year master plan that claims Guilford County Schools will need $1.2 billion in renovations over the next 10 years.

A $5.3 million renovation program at High Point Central High School has fallen more than two weeks behind schedule,he believes the fire started after the lift's China ceramic tile blew, and the department is contacting the bonding company of the main contractor on the project, Miles Builders Inc. of Charlotte, according to an email from Guilford County Schools Chief Operating Officer Andy LaRowe that was distributed to administrators throughout the school system.

LaRowe wrote, "We are notifying Miles Builders' performance bond surety company in reference to lack of performance and payment concerns on the High Point Central School Gym Renovation project.the landscape oil paintings pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs."

LaRowe listed as reasons for the action allegations that Miles Builders was more than two weeks behind schedule, failed to supply enough properly skilled workers to the project, failed to make payment to subcontractors in a timely fashion and failed to comply with its coordination and scheduling obligations for the High Point Central project.

"We have met several times in an attempt to assist Miles Builders with a recovery schedule, however,There are zentai underneath mattresses, they continue to fall further behind," LaRowe wrote. Miles Builders representatives could not be reached for a response to the school system's allegations.

Kidd said, "It's all in the legal realm, and all the particulars, I don't know about."

Guilford County Schools is in the middle of a $457 million building program funded by Guilford County voters in a May 2008 school bond referendum. The results of the program have so far been mixed. As earlier mentioned, in most areas I hunt mature bucks (three and one-half years old and older) have turned nocturnal prior to season due to multiple, intrusive preseason scouting ventures by other hunters in the bucks core living area which always extends beyond the parcel I have permission to hunt on.

Other than public lands, by knocking on doors for permission I currently have four parcels that have fruit or mast trees on them. I share a 400-acre northern Michigan parcel with three other hunters. Two hundred sixty-acres of it are groomed crop fields and the remaining 140 is mature timber that is totally devoid of understudy worthy of a mature buck bedding in. For Michigan 400-acres is a monstrous chunk of property yet this parcel is not well suited for daytime mature buck activity.

Although I have a couple locations prepared at isolated apple trees and a couple at white oaks I rarely hunt this parcel early in the season. It has however been productive for daytime mature buck activity during the rut phases when mature bucks are pursuing does.

Although this parcel is small it has a dense seven-acre bedding area that we have all agreed to stay out of. Since this is the densest bedding area in the section it always seems to hold a mature buck. We are all on board with postseason tree preparation (since it is so small we no longer need to scout for new locations), and during preseason, as scent free as possible and on the same day we tidy up our locations, and then hunt them with extreme moderation.

Since our preseason speed clean up venture doesn’t interfere with where mature bucks bed, we are not altering their behavior. Two of us have been very successful at taking mature bucks on this parcel during the rut phases, and I have had success during the first few days of season at the isolated apple tree.
