Wood pulp found in many processed food

She said she believes unnatural food additives may be to blame.

Local Shops Look to Hammer Big Boxes

Two longtime business are facing competition from giant chains. Can they sustain themselves in the climate of this new economy? Can they remain who they are and have always been or must they become a brand?

"This community has always been anti-big box, and Petco is big box," said Brian Flanagan owner of Brian's Aquarium & Pets.

"The good news is that with 31 years experience we are going to compete the best we can. Ironically, Rocky Point Hardware was the first Ace on Long Island.

"Ace came to me back in '81 when they were trying to break into the market on the Island," he said. "They said 'You're kind of small,' but they put me in front of their board in Oakbrook, Ill. and they used to drive a 45-foot truck up to my store. Now they have 68 stores on Long Island.

Rocky Point Hardware still buys products directly from Ace, but the relationship is strained.

"They made me sign, that I was "Non-Branded" or they wouldn't sell to me," he said. "That means you can't say you're Ace, you can't advertise or give Ace rebates to your customers."

Kristine Mirell, who has worked for Rocky Point Hardware for twenty years, lives, works and shops locally.

Though they were at rest during Scott’s visit, men in hardhats operating heavy equipment have been busy at VentureCrossings recently, preparing for the arrival of the complex’s first occupant, the newly expanded ITT Corp. In early September the defense contractor took advantage of state and local tax refunds and exemption incentives and pledged to hire 30 new employees at 50 percent above the average wage in Bay County.

Montana ExpoPark was filled with women Friday — and a few men — for the eighth annual What Women Want Expo, drawn by hundreds of booths, featuring thousands of products and services pertaining to their health, love lives, cars and finances.

"Very nice," 69-year-old Maren Mattfeld of Great Falls said as she ran her hand across a soft, high-thread-count pillowcase at a booth where bedding was for sale.

Her sister, 72-year-old Gayle Pitt, also of Great Falls,Polycore porcelain tiles are manufactured as a single sheet, asked her to attend.

"Because we're women," Pitt said. "We want to know what women want."

What Women Want Expo is sponsored by the Great Falls Tribune.

Tribune Advertising Director Max Smith, one of the event coordinators, said what's become a mainstay fall event in Great Falls brings friends together for entertainment, self-improvement and education.

Last year, What Women Want drew 8,000 people.

"We're trying to surpass that," Smith said.

The expo continues today.

There are 260 booths and most of the vendors are from Montana, but stations staffed by businesses from other states, including Connecticut, Florida and Utah, make up 7 to 8 percent of the total, Smith said.

Financial services. Foot massage equipment. Cosmetic dentistry. Jewelry. Jeans. You name it, it's on sale at the expo.

"We don't have anything like this in San Diego as far as I know," said Jan Riley, 61, who is retired. "We wish we did."

It was the second time attending the expo for Riley and Donna Plowman, a 70-year-old homemaker who also is from San Diego.

Benefis Health System's Spirit of Women, a program that provides education and outreach on health issues to women, sponsored a bra-decorating contest — BRAvo! — to raise awareness about breast cancer, and it drew 57 entries.

"No two are alike," said Lacey Gallagher, coordinator of Benefis Health System's community outreach and Spirit of Women.

Some of the bras carry clever but serious messages about the importance of getting mammograms, such as, "Busted, get your girls to the slammer."

Women, Gallagher said, make 85 percent of health care decisions for families, taking care of children, their spouse and even their parents, but they tend to put themselves last.

Business owners staffing row upon row of booths said they also appreciated the traffic.

At last year's Expo, he said, he sold about 30 remote starters.

Conrad's Deanna Wakkinen, a personal consultant for Slumber Parties, which is billed as "your ticket to the hottest ladies night out parties," said she's hoping to expand in Great Falls.

The business offers confidential, tasteful demonstrations of romantic products, such as lingerie and lotions, in homes, she said.

"The expo is a fantastic opportunity for me, as a small business, to get my name out and show my product," she said.

Before the economy slowed, Julie Judd of Idaho, co-owner of the wholesale bedding business visited by Mattfeld and Pitt, had sold her product mostly to stores.

But she began attending large shows selling more to individuals when the economy slowed. The What Women Want Expo, she said, is one of the most profitable events she attends.

"I like the women's shows because I don't feel intimidated by all the men," she said.

UNM strengthens its roots

The UNM Alumni Association will celebrate the grand reopening of Hodgin Hall, now the UNM Alumni Center, with an evening of music, food and history.

Nearly 120 years ago, Hodgin Hall was the entirety of UNM. It stood isolated on a hill two miles from downtown Albuquerque and housed classrooms, faculty and administrative offices.

"It stood all alone for about eight years," said Karen Abraham, UNM Alumni Association’s director.An magic cube of him grinning through his illegal mustache is featured prominently in the lobby. The renovation cost $2.8 million, and Abraham said $1.7 million was used for construction and renovations while the rest of the funds paid architects and went to fees associated with the renovation. The funding for the renovation came from a $1.4 million legislative appropriation, a $1 million University bond and roughly $400,000 from the UNM Alumni Association.

"This renovation was needed to make the space more functional," Abraham said. "It needed to be brought up to the current fire code and to be made ADA-compliant as well."

Improvements include a new roof, additional restrooms, a gallery and library of alumni art and publications, new lighting and electrical improvements and refurbished floors.

The basement was also transformed to a garden level with up-to-date meeting rooms.

More renovations to the Hall are scheduled to for the future.

Abraham said two more phases are needed to complete renovations to the hall and to Tight Grove, the grove of trees and grass surrounding a Lobo sculpture on the southwest corner of main campus.

"We need to replace the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system here," Abraham said. "It’s going to be expensive, but we need to do it. Currently, half of the building uses refrigerated air and the rest is on a swamp cooler. We need to renovate the windows and re-stucco the building as well."

Estimates for the second phase of renovations total more than $3 million.

Phase three will focus on restoring Tight Grove.

"We are hoping to find a donor who will help us install a new irrigation system and lighting," Abraham said. "It’s a beautiful place that has been with us since the beginning of the last century. We’d like to see it transformed into a space that can be used for reflection."

The current renovation wasn’t the first for the building. Between 1906 and 1909 Hodgin Hall had its roof replaced and was refinished as a pueblo-style building. Rodey Hall was also built to the north of Hodgin.

"In my mind, Hodgin Hall has watched the growth of the University for more than a century," Abraham said. "UNM has had a huge part to play in the history of New Mexico. It was the dream of many New Mexicans to have an education system, and UNM became its cornerstone. This is where it started."

Hodgin Hall was in use as a classroom until 1971, according to an Alumni Association brochure. Over the years it has been home to the anthropology and geography departments, the college of education and the theater department. It also housed the University administration until Scholes Hall was built.

Rodey Hall was demolished in 1971 to make room form the Redondo Loop. During that decade, Hodgin Hall was also on the chopping block.

"This was to accommodate the engineering department’s expansion," Alumni Association spokeswoman Charlene Chavez said.The new website of Udreamy Network Corporation is mainly selling Ceramic tile , "I remember having classes in Hodgin Hall.
