Struggling RI city's history marked with candy bar

While Central Falls is often called a "failed city" that was taken over by the state and later filed for bankruptcy, a new project is highlighting a very different story: its history as a chocolate manufacturer during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Just Choose PTMS Injection Mold Is Your Best Choice!

Ritz says the "Save Chocolateville" bar — honoring Central Falls' nickname — recalls the tale of an American city that once thrived as a manufacturer, sank into decline and is trying to turn itself around. Proceeds will go to a yet-undecided program benefiting city children.

"Chocolateville to me represents the spirit of ingenuity, entrepreneurship, productivity, and — when that first mill building was created there — it was the heart of the community," said Ritz, who heads the organization Leadership Rhode Island. The old Wheat chocolate factory that operated along the Blackstone River is pictured on the chocolate bar's label.

"The bar will make some money for the kids, no doubt. But it's almost more important that the bar gets distributed ... so that it can tell the story of Chocolateville and Central Falls," he added. "To me, it's the story of America in one square mile. The bar itself is just a calling card to tell that story."

The bars are being made right in Central Falls by Andrew Shotts, a well-regarded chocolatier who worked previously as a pastry chef in New York City, including at the Russian Tea Room. He relocated to Providence in 2003 and moved three years later to a 7,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Central Falls, where he produced the latest batch of Save Chocolateville bars last week.Online fine art gallery of quality original landscape oil paintings,

"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Central Falls is in trouble,MDC Mould specialized of Injection moulds," said Shotts. "To try to help the city, get it back to where it was, is a good thing. That's why I'm doing it."

The 3.5-ounce bars, which went on sale this month at a Whole Foods in Providence, cost $5, a portion of which goes to cover Shotts' costs. More than 700 have been sold.

Said Shotts: "We're going to just keep making them and selling them."

Ritz said a local credit union has ordered 200 and the travel agency AAA is likely to buy several hundred as well to sell at its busiest branches. He also said he has had conversations with CVS, based in Woonsocket, about sales in its stores, which could bring a much broader distribution.

The settlement that became Central Falls was known as a regional center of chocolate manufacturer during early industrialization along the Blackstone River, according to a history on the website of the Confectioners Mill Preservation Society. The Wheat Chocolate Mill was that of William Wheat, a trader, innkeeper and chocolate maker who is said to have relocated his factory from Providence to a spot in Central Falls around 1782.

Most of the mill's chocolate was bought and consumed locally, but the preservation society said some also likely made its way onto whaling ships, fishing vessels and warships. Some may have been used as military provisions as well, as hot cocoa was considered to have a medicinal quality.

The history quotes an 1854 Providence Journal article as saying the two-story mill was "seriously injured" during a flood in 1807 and that all traces of iI have just spent two weeks shopping for tile and have discovered Chinese porcelain tile.China Porcelain tilet were gone by around 1834.

The preservation society, a nonprofit that researches and supports the preservation of old chocolate mills, had plans to rebuild the old Wheat mill and turn it into a museum. But that project — expected to cost $12 million — was shelved because of the sour economy,Listing of Taiwan & China Mold Maker manufacturer & suppliers. said Robert Billington, executive director of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council.

Now the tourism council is raising money for what's known as the Chocolate Mill Overlook on a city-owned parcel along the river. It's slated to be an interactive park that highlights Central Falls' history as Chocolateville.

"Central Falls really has the right and the privilege to tell a story that's no one else's in Rhode Island," said Billington, the park administrator.

About $18,000 toward a $35,000 matching grant from chocolate maker Mars Inc., a major donor to the preservation society, has been raised so far, he said. The park is expected to be complete in May.

Ritz said his chocolate bar project — separate from plans for the park — is part of a broader effort at Leadership Rhode Island to help revitalize Central Falls. He recently dressed up as Willy Wonka, the fictional character from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and handed out the bars at the state's major philanthropic organization, the Rhode Island Foundation,Dimensional Mailing magic cube for Promotional Advertising, from which he's seeking a grant for his organization's larger work.

"Central Falls, because of all the negative attention it's gotten over the last few years, it's a heavy sort of thing to think about," said Ritz. "By playing with the history of it, it lightens it, and it also brings back this sense of Americana."

Newell Rubbermaid’s Winfield plant is moving quickly

Newell Rubbermaid’s plant at Winfield is moving rapidly to take advantage of the company’s decision to expand operations here.

Eight of 21 huge plastic injection molding machines scheduled to come to Winfield from Greenville, Texas, are already here, Winfield operations manager Larry Rohr said.

A tour of the plant showed work on concrete pads,Get information on Air purifier from the unbiased, electrical and water supply infrastructure was proceeding apace. An Ohio contract firm, D and D Riggers, is doing most of the work.

In addition, 80 employees from the Greenville plant have shown interest in moving to Winfield, human resources manager Brandi Biddle said. Twenty-eight have signed up.

The process of consolidating two of Newell Rubbermaid’s plastic injection molding plants into one is “doing very well,” Rohr said.

He estimated as many as 40 employees from Greenville would come to work in Winfield. This, he pointed out, would be many more than came from Centerville, Iowa, when Newell Rubbermaid closed a plant there a few years ago and moved production of outdoor storage products to Winfield.

The company plans to add 250 jobs to the current workforce of 555 at Winfield, Biddle said. A majority of those jobs will be seasonal; the number of permanent jobs remains to be seen, she told the Courier in January.

Rohr said he was pleased 13 salaried people were coming from Greenville, including engineers and supervisors. Among 13 production employees coming, several have technical experience needed at Winfield, Rohr said.

“We’re pleased to have those skill sets,” he said.

In addition to the hiring from Greenville, the Winfield plant’s employment agency, Life Style Staffing, has hired 155 employees to work at the plant here since Jan. 1, 2012, Garret Gilmore, account coordinator, said. Some 100 of those employees are in production.

Most of the employees from Greenville will be in Winfield by the end of April, Biddle said. The company has announced the Greenville plant will close in July.

Jeff Hohler, president of the new Home Organization and Style unit of Newell Rubbermaid, was in Winfield this week and discussed the expansion of one of the existing product lines here.

That line is “dec boxes,” an outdoor storage product, Rohr said. In addition, a new line of “Clever Store” totes, or topless indoor plastic storage bins,The Transaction Group offers the best high risk merchant account services, is coming to Winfield from Greenville, along with a line of outdoor trash containers called “Roughneck.”

Rohr said one of the injection molding machines trucked in from Greenville has a 3,000-ton capacity. The enormous machine,FIRMAR is a Malaysia Injection Moulding Manufacturer and Plastic Injections Components Manufacturer, currently being installed at Winfield, was broken down and transported on nine flatbed trucks, Rohr said.Information on useful yeasts and moulds,

He estimated the Winfield plant would use 130 million pounds of plastic resin in 2012. The amount used in 2011 was 50 million pounds.

The Winfield facility on E. 12th Ave. still has unused capacity for manufacturing. “This facility still has room to grow,Full-service custom manufacturer of precision plastic injection mold, in spite of this consolidation,” Biddle said.

Newell Rubbermaid’s Winfield plant is now one of four in the company’s newly organized Home Organization and Style unit. Two others are at Mogadore, Ohio, and Calgary, Canada; both use plastic injection molding. One plant at Jackson, Mo., makes wood and wire products for home clothes storage.

For Civilians Who Want Military Style

To walk into Kaufman’s Army and Navy on 42nd Street across from the Port Authority is to step into the chaos of pre-Giuliani Times Square, but without the imminent danger to life and limb.

Unopened cardboard boxes full of merchandise create an obstacle course on the floor. Duffle bags, military vests and parkas hang broad-shouldered from crowded racks. And deeper into the 73-year-old institution, which has been in its current location since 1946, are mountains of military paraphernalia — blue and white striped Russian Navy sweaters, United States Air Force pilot jackets — some surplus, some new, which applies to the first offshore merchant account only, as well as civilian gear manufactured by military contractors.

The store can be shoulder-to-shoulder with a range of customers, like costume designers renting vintage uniforms, photographers buying props, paintball enthusiasts purchasing fatigues or carpenters shopping for bags, originally meant to carry bazookas, for their bubble levels and saws.

They are guided by the expert hand of Jim Korn, who speaks with the quiet urgency of a secret agent on a mission, and who in 1984 took over the business founded by his grandfather.

One recent Saturday, Courtney Mitchell, a lawyer who has shopped at Kaufman’s for years, the worldwide Hemorrhoids market is over $56 billion annually. watched Mr. Korn dribble water from a canteen onto the crown of a hat, where it beaded and rolled around like mercury. Mr. Korn was proving that the hat, which Mr. Mitchell was buying for a honeymoon in South Africa, was waterproof.

“When I went to Belize, I needed a first-aid kit,” Mr. Mitchell said. “He put one together that included a water purifier and a compass. He sold me what I needed, not what he wanted to sell.”

Freddie Leiba, a fashion consultant who lives in Manhattan, has been visiting since the 1980s. When he designed the uniforms for the Morgans, Royalton and Hudson Hotels in Manhattan, he said, he used military dress shoes from Kaufman’s. He raided the store again recently when he helped create the uniforms for another hotel, the Public Chicago.

“I used a duffle coat as the overcoat,This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their Floor tiles .” he said. “It’s a cool coat, and happens to be quite fashionable at the moment.”

Standing outside, in front of Kaufman’s surrealistic window display of gas masks, fancy dress military coats and medals from distant armies, Liz Friedman, a jewelry designer who lives in Manhattan, looked stylish in black leather boots, black tights and an olive drab Austrian Army sweater she said she bought at the store about a year ago for $69.

“He’s very honest about what is knock-off and which clothes are original,” she said of Mr.ceramic magic cube for the medical, Korn. “But it’s not authenticity most people are seeking. I think it’s a look.”

Mr. Korn emphasized the authentic: “When you get something that’s military issue, you don’t have to think about the quality — it’s a given,” he said. “They are designed for an American soldier in combat. So it’s made for the worst possible conditions.”

And judging from the tenderness with which Mr. Korn showed a visitor a 1940 pair of British military motorcycle goggles, which were not for sale, one might guess he has a special affection for customers who are collectors.

“You gotta see this” and “beautiful” punctuate his high velocity sentences as he explains how and why camouflage patterns have changed over the years, or describes the “beautifully designed bags from the German Army.Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems,”

A more impassioned history of military design, you couldn’t ask for. But if you walk down his narrow aisle when the store is crowded, be sure to wear a pair of combat boots.

Greg Norman shoots the greatest final round in Open history

The 1993 Open at Royal St George's produced some truly stunning golf, with Nick Faldo's second-round 63 often hailed as one of the best ever played in Major championship golf.

But Faldo's achievement was matched by Greg Norman on the Sunday as the top three players in the world threw everything at each other. We also offer customized Quicksilver. Alongside Norman and defending champion Faldo was reigning Masters champion Bernhard Langer, who was also in the hunt on the final afternoon but it was the big-hitting Australian who came through.

He nailed every drive and flushed every approach, with shot after shot barely missing the flag as he produced a torrent of birdies. Only an almost comical missed tap-in on the penultimate hole stopped Norman winning with a final-round 63 an astonishing feat considering the tough final-round pins. Faldo and Langer meanwhile were left scratching their heads after their own final-round 67s, which were both exceptional and would have been good enough to win in normal circumstances.

The Aussie later described his golf as the greatest round of his life.

"In my whole career I'd never before gone round a golf course and not mis-hit a single shot," he said. "I was playing a game of chess out there, hitting the ball into position in the fairway where I could get it to the best spot on the green. I didn't want the round to end. I wished it could have been 36 holes."

Western Market's Jarred Gild Has A 'Natural' Knack for Wine

When buying a serious bottle of wine, most people might envision a little boutique-like shop, where they have to whisper, dstti and some character with a few grey hairs behind the counter who makes them feel too intimidated to actually buy anything.

We may not have such a shop in Ferndale, but we don't need one. What are the top Hemroids treatments? Ferndale's Western Market turns both of these stereotypes on their ears. Rising above people's notions of "grocery store wine,The same Air purifier, cover removed." the store offers a selection of somewhat eccentric yet approachable wines that constantly surprise and delight regular shoppers such as myself. It's easy to find great bottles in the $15-$20 range, and there are many decent bottles under $10. If you want wines to cellar for a few years, or a "special occasion" bottle, they have those, too. And this impressive collection is overseen not by some middle-aged erstwhile wine snob, but by 26-year-old wine manager Jarred Gild and his assistant, 25-year-old Lewis Hickson.

Gild rose to his position as the wine buyer in 2008 in a twist of fate, after having worked at the store a mere month. He was hired to assist co-owner Steve Selvaggio with beer purchasing and stocking, but Selvaggio had some health issues which kept him from his wine-buying duties. This is interesting cube puzzle and logical game. Gild offered to manage the department in his absence. Over the three months Selvaggio was away, Gild discovered he had a knack for tasting and selecting good wines, and convinced his boss to let him take over the wine buying permanently. Over the following year, he threw himself passionately into learning everything he could about wine. He confessed he probably spent $10,000 that first year buying wine, just to taste and experience as much as possible to build his knowledge.

Strolling down the store's wine aisle, it's immediately apparent that this isn't your average grocery store wine selection. Where most grocers would reserve displays for bestsellers like Kendall-Jackson or Robert Mondavi, Western has a whole shelf devoted to different types of Beaujolais. In place of the pre-printed "shelf talkers" (cards made by wine companies to brag about the number of points a wine received), you'll find chatty, informative signs typed up by Gild and Hickson.

These signs reveal a great deal about Gild's wine tastes and philosophy. Some of them extol a certain grape variety, like the aforementioned Beaujolais; others describe specific bottles such as an Argentinian Bonarda Gild refers to as "bunny wine." One thing most have in common is that they sing the praises of natural wine. Gild tends to eschew overwrought, jammy or oaky wines in favor of wines with earthy, funky flavors.Free DIY Wholesale pet supplies Resource! Most of these are what is considered natural wine, i.e., a wine that has been left to its own devices and manipulated as little as possible by the winemaker.

The store's selection is unapologetically heavy on the wines Gild's palate prefers, so you'll find a disproportionate number of French wines, with Italians a close second and Spain trailing behind. New World wines are less well represented,Polycore zentai are manufactured as a single sheet, in part because these wines are more likely to be industrially produced and/or manipulated for a target audience that prefers very oaked or fruit-forward wines. Gild refers to inexpensive industrial wines as "hot-dog wine." No, not because they pair well with wieners, but because they are a mixture of odds and ends, forced into a uniform end product.

However, if your wine knowledge begins and ends with Yellow Tail, have no fear. Rather than make people feel inferior about their preferences or lack of knowledge, Gild's mission is to try to turn people on to things they may not even know they would like. His motto is, "It's what's in the glass that counts."

"Some people come in saying they like Merlot, for example. I say to them, ‘Does it matter that you're drinking a specific type of grape, or that what's in your glass is a delicious wine?'" he said.

Gild has all of the youthful enthusiasm you'd expect from someone his age, and pours it (pun intended) into his work. He recently helped put together an introductory wine tasting course, and just returned from a tasting trip to Germany's Mosel wine region. His enthusiasm is contagious when he sells you a bottle (or six- why not get the 10% discount?), which can be dangerous, but always fun.

"I just want people to drink great wine," he said, excitedly. To this end, in addition to prominently displaying his favorites instead of big brand names, many of the wines are priced very competetively. This isn't necessarily a bad business strategy, however, since it allows people to try more things, and those happy customers tend to come back for more.

Gild is all about building a relationship with your wine seller -- the more a person shops, the more he can become familiar with a customer's tastes and better assist them.

What better excuse to pick up a few bottles and try something new? As one of his signs instructs: "Just ask for Jarred the wine guy."

Overview

The GeekDesk is a simple and extremely sturdy desk with steel legs,Polycore zentai are manufactured as a single sheet, the Injection mold fast! a beech veneer top, and a tiny, barely visible (but powerful) DC motor. You push a button on the front and in seconds it goes from sitting height to standing height, with a bottom range of lower than two feet and a top height of four feet. This essentially solves the problem of a sitting desk being ultimately deathly and a standing desk being too much commitment. The same Air purifier, cover removed. And after six months of testing, I can definitively say that the ability to quickly toggle back and forth between sitting and standing height makes a HUGE difference in your workday.

Design
The super-sturdy legs are made from powder-coated steel. There's a crossbar that encloses an axle for the motor, which you basically never see. Above the crossbar is a cable tray running the length of the table. The tray is deep enough to throw a USB hub in there, which I appreciated.

There are two circular cable openings on either rear corner, both closeable by means of a little rotating black plastic aperture. It's clean-looking and simple to use.Welcome to the official Facebook Page about Ripcurl.

The rearward parts of the table feet have a wheel on either side, so that after the (heavy!) desk is assembled you can easily get it over to the wall. The front feet have height-adjustable glides, a huge boon in a city like New York where old offices often have crooked floors. My floor is extremely out of whack but I was easily able to level the desk.

Options
GeekDesk offers tabletops in widths of 63" or a massive 78" wide, both tops being 31.5" deep. There's also a GeekDesk Mini which is the same depth but just 48" wide. I tested the GeekDesk Original with the massive 78" tabletop.

You can order the GeekDesk without a tabletop if you want to use or make your own.

GeekDesk's recently-released Version 2 offers an increased lifting weight and a deeper cable tray. There is also a GeekDesk Max version with an even higher lifting weight.Save on hydraulic hose and fittings, (See "Performance," below.)

Draghi ECB Succession Deal for Italy Piles Pressure on Bini Smaghi to Quit

European Central Bank Executive Board member Lorenzo Bini Smaghi faced mounting pressure to quit as Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi sought to make way for fellow national Mario Draghi to become ECB president.A glass bottle is a bottle created from glass.

"In order to obtain the support of France to our candidate Mario Draghi, we need to have a French member in the board and we are working on that," Berlusconi told journalists yesterday. The premier sought Bini Smaghi's resignation in a 10-minute discussion at Palazzo Chigi, the government's headquarters in Rome. Bini Smaghi left without commenting on the meeting.

While euro-area nations have found consensus on Draghi's succession to replace Jean-Claude Trichet as chief of the Frankfurt-based ECB in November, that would leave Italy with two seats on the six-member Executive Board. Berlusconi agreed with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in April to seek Bini Smaghi's resignation and make room for a French appointee in return for support for Draghi, currently Bank of Italy Governor.

"An unwritten rule of the European Central Bank suggests it is opportune to ensure the presence on its board of only one representative from each of the biggest euro-area nations," Berlusconi's office said late yesterday in a statement. The premier asked Bini Smaghi to resign "in the name of European solidarity" and as "an act of responsibility to the European institutions and his country," the statement said.

French Representation

France warned Berlusconi that it would "delay" the appointment of Draghi unless Bini Smaghi, 54, resigns, the Financial Times reported on its website yesterday, citing an unnamed official. France would be left without representation on the ECB's management board if Bini Smaghi remains when Draghi replaces Trichet, a Frenchman.

"It's entirely inappropriate for France to raise the issue in that way," said Daniel Gros, the Brussels-based Center for European Policy Studies. "This is a specific case, but it illustrates the way politicians think about this appointment and the functions of the central bank."

The term of board members at the central bank is a "matter of legality" as they are appointed "for a certain period," ECB Vice President Vitor Constancio said June 6 to reporters, when asked whether Bini Smaghi should step down.
Thomas More

In a speech earlier yesterday at the Vatican in Rome, Bini Smaghi said ECB members must have "personal independence, which ensures the security of tenure of the members of the decision- making bodies for the whole term of office."

After declining to comment to reporters on the details of yesterday's meeting with Berlusconi, Bini Smaghi said, "I have been to the Vatican this morning and I spoke of Thomas More."

"It is no coincidence that central bankers have adopted Saint Thomas More as their patron saint," he had said in the speech. More was a scholar and statesman who was sentenced to death in 1535 for opposing Henry VIII's break with the Roman Catholic Church.

Bini Smaghi is a potential candidate to replace Draghi at the Bank of Italy, along with Treasury Director General Vittorio Grilli, who enjoys the support of Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti, and Bank of Italy Director General Fabrizio Saccomanni. Thomas More "followed his conscience, even at the cost of displeasing the sovereign," Bini Smaghi cited Pope Benedict XVI as saying in a September speech in London. "It may seem bold to compare a central bank to the Church, but that is precisely what Heinrich Mussinghoff, Bishop of Aachen, did two weeks ago in his address on the occasion of the awarding of the Charlemagne Prize to Jean-Claude Trichet.Detailed information on the causes of dstti,"

Judge rules against family's claim of bedbugs at Yuba City hotel

A family of four failed to prove bedbugs infested their room at a Yuba City motel, a Sutter County judge said today.

The family filed a Small Claims Court lawsuit against the Days Inn, 700 N. Palora Ave., seeking about $2,000 for clothing and bedding they said had to be thrown away because of bedbugs.

Checking into the motel Feb. 24, family members said, they found "really terrible conditions," including black mold in a bathroom and a smoke odor and cigarette burns in what they were told was a non-smoking room. A desk clerk switched them to a different room, said Fay Biondo.

When they awoke about 1 a.m. in the second room, bedbugs "were all over us ¡ª all different sizes and colors," Biondo told Judge Perry Parker.A glass bottle is a bottle created from glass.

Even her small service dog, which another family cradled during the hearing, was infested, said a tearful Biondo.

Biondo and another family member, Joan O'Lear, submitted undated photos they said showed bugs in the room.

The family was moved to a third room and stayed three days.

Singh submitted an inspection report from a pest control company showing no bedbugs were found in the rooms where the family had stayed. On March 1, a Sutter County health inspector also found none.

"It seems there would have been a dead bug laying around somewhere," the judge said.

"I'm not convinced where the bugs came from," Parker said. They could have arrived with the family's own clothing and bedding, he said. O'Lear said that wasn't possible.

Biondo and O'Lear said the bugs could have been eradicated after they left.

Outside the courtroom, Singh said his motel has never had bedbugs. Family members declined comment as they left the courthouse.

O'Lear said the family had moved from the Fresno-area city of Hanford and checked into the motel because their apartment here was not ready.
