Chevy Volt Review

There is no doubt that the Chevy Volt is a revolutionary machine. Housed inside the seemingly normal sedan like body is not only a naturally aspirated engine, but an electric one as well. That said, the Chevy Volt appeals to wider audience than that of the Nissan Leaf since it can run like an everyday vehicle without the range concerns, yet still boasts the same green street cred.

Over the course of the 7 days I drove the Chevy Volt in a variety of scenarios and tried to unearth the car’s flaws. And while it definitely has some, I was pleasantly surprised with Chevy’s attention to detail and overall craftsmanship. The Chevy Volt is a 4 door sedan with hatchback like trunk. It’s rather unremarkable at a glance, but there a number of subtelties that makes this anything but your parent’s Chevy. First off, the car has specifically been designed with a drag coefficient in mind; they’ve tried to minimize wind resistance with the hopes of increasing fuel economy. The windshield sits as a rather aggressive slope, the mirrors look like they’ve been molded by air themselves and the traditional vehicle grill has been replaced by a metal body like armor that looks like it was crafted in the the future. However, Chevy has taken care to make sure that the Volt is not a vast departure from their other vehicles on the road and in fact could pass for Chevy Malibu at a quick glance, provided you overlooked the Volt insignia on the rear of the vehicle and some other design cues.

Needless to say the Volt houses two “gas” flaps. At the rear of the vehicle is your traditional gas tank lid, while the electrical socket is located just in front of the driver’s side door. Unlike its gas guzzling counterpart it can be opened directly from the key fob, or by an interior button found on the driver’s side door. Like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy has opted for the standard charging plug, which is now popping up around the US, though the majority are still located throughout California, with an additional roll out planned that promises ultra fast charging.

Just beneath the car front bumper sits a rubber flap. It’s an assumption, but I believe it is designed to further help reduce the drag of the car. At glance of the vehicle it’s virtually undetectable, that unless of course you driving the Volt down a ramp, say into a garage, where upon it will inevitably drag.This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their Floor tiles . It took some getting use to, but I eventually took comfort knowing that it was a rubber flap, and while it may be incurring some damage, it won’t aesthetically impact the car’s facade and probably is easily replaceable in the event it incurs too much damage.

I live in Santa Monica, CA so there is no shortage of Toyota’s Prius; sneeze and you can hit one. To be completely candid, I’m not a fan of Toyota’s vehicle, both because I think it’s a poser’s car and is God awful ugly. After parking the Volt side-by-side with the Japanese hybrid I could see similar design cues, but it was absolutely apparent that the Volt is a better looking vehicle that boasts more aggressive lines and appeal that doesn’t try to be what it hopes to be, it just is, which is a green vehicle. Nonetheless, it’s still very much a Chevy, all American vehicle despite its forward thinking internals. Don’t expect European like curves and subtleties to surprise you as you continue to drive this vehicle.

Contrary to the Volt’s exterior design cues,Polycore oil paintings for sale are manufactured as a single sheet, the interior of the vehicle is supple, comfortable and all together a pleasure to sit in. The center console divides the entire car’s seating arrangement to house the battery pack. As a result the rear can only accommodate two adults, though that might be questionable if a 6-foot plus driver is at the wheel such as myself; there was mere inches of leg room behind me. However, I’m glad to report that I didn’t have to put the seat all the way back to find a comfortable driving position. Notably there is more than adequate room for drinks, though I’m sure a family of 5 would gladly sacrifice that feature for more seating room.

The leather seating is nothing short of exceptional, and like the rest of the car’s interior deserves the same attention to detail that Chevy put into crafting the interior cabin’s line.If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards, But, that said, the Chevy Volt’s interior, at least in terms of driver position in regards to the dash, windshield and blind spots is an entirely different beast and one that had me frustrated. I’ll let the pictures do the majority of the talking, but as you can see the rear window is heavily obstructed. On the converse, turning into crosswalks almost resulted in a few flattened pedestrians as the frame of the vehicle is just wide enough that it blocks your line of sight when looking 45 degrees forward; your line of sight into the cross walk. David Syme, owner of Animalia Pets & Supplies in Sault Ste Marie, rushed in from the sidewalk, dekeing around men with stepladders, wires and lights. In a few minutes he fielded six hamsters and stuffed them back into their cage yet again.

Animal use in movies has come a long, long way since those bad old days. Whether or not there was someone from the Ontario Humane Society, or even the local humane society, on the set, the animals in "Foxfire" were treated with every possible consideration. When the Foxfire Company called David to see if he would provide animals for the shoot, they made it clear that he would be on the set, too, simply to make sure the animals had all they needed.

The dresser needed animals that would have been available in a small-town pet store in the 1950s. Most of the animals, even the fish, that we now consider common in the pet trade weren't available then. We provided hamsters, mice, small birds and a smallish iguana. Nothing else in the store—ferrets, leopard geckoes, hedgehogs—was suitable. The puppies and kittens needed for the set had to come from an animal rescue. It was an interesting reminder of how the pet trade has changed.

The week before the filming day, two of the set crew brought aquariums for David to decorate, and some cages that they thought he might be able to use. The night before filming they took all the aquariums, plus the cages of hamsters, budgies, finches and canaries, to the set. We followed with bagged fish and the iguana in a cat carrier. David brought water conditioner for the aquariums, and in an hour or so all the animals were set up and bedded down.

Morning was when things got interesting.

We arrived at 8 a.m. The little store was crowded with people arranging wires and lights and hanging a black-fabric baffle from the ceiling.

"This looks too modern," the set-dresser said, indicating the white powder-finished hamster cages. "We were going to put them in that one last night, but we decided to wait for you."

"That one" was a rabbit cage in 1-in. hardware cloth. If they'd followed through with that plan, there wouldn't have been a hamster in sight by morning.

"Can you put them in these?" she asked. "These" were old wire birdcages, with gaps in the wire for the missing feed cups. It took several tries with wire, cardboard and, ultimately, duct tape, to keep the hamsters in.

The film company had transformed Gore Street with vintage cars and actors in 1950s clothing. What we learned about making movies is that it's a lot of hurry-up-and-wait. For most of the long, hot July day we, along with the crew, sat outside in carefully designated areas out of camera range. Paintings celebrate the power of the Welsh landscape

GET Gwyn Roberts talking about his work and he’ll take you on a virtual tour of some of Wales’ highest and wildest places.

A keen walker who grew up in North Wales, Roberts has enjoyed runaway success in recent years with his bold palette knife paintings of Snowdonia and the rugged West Wales coastline.

His latest body of work features paintings of the Carneddau range,Als lichtbron wordt een offshore merchant account gebruikt, Tryfan, the Glyder range and Lochtyn, just north of Llangrannog. Most of these are favourite places where he has walked and sketched for years, and his work communicates an enduring love and reverence for these often-ferocious landscapes.

“A lot of these latest paintings stem from a trip to North Wales at Easter,” says the Cardiff-based painter.If any food cube puzzle condition is poorer than those standards, “I met up with my son there and we spent a long weekend walking. We had a fantastic day on Glyder Fach – it’s mayhem up there, as if somebody has blown the whole place up; there are rocks sticking up in all directions. There’s an outcrop there called Castell y Gwynt, or castle of the wind, which has big chunks of rock in the shape of a castle. It’s a bizarre and wonderful place.”

A painting of the same name captures Castell y Gwynt’s air of brooding drama. Drama is a key word for Roberts – it’s what he’s seeking when he scrambles up mountains or peers over cliff edges to the smashing waves below.

“You have to get yourself into a good position so you get that feeling – I’m always scrambling around on the edge of the coast looking for a good vista and I tend to instantly create a frame in my brain so that I know what the composition is going to be.”

Back in the studio, the challenge is to revisit sketches, photographs and memories in order to re-create the sense of excitement he felt at the time.

“I usually try to put across a bit of drama and I like contrast as well,” he says. “If the dark and light are emphasised you get more drama, more of a 3D effect and more atmosphere.”

To achieve this he usually applies the dark paint first, and to keep the painting bold and immediate he lays most of the image down in just one layer of paint.

“I paint with thick oil so I can’t work over anything – it has to be spontaneous and direct. If you work over it,he believes the fire started after the lift's China ceramic tile blew, it mixes and becomes sludgy.”

This approach is a far cry from the way he painted earlier in his career.

“I used to paint painfully meticulously – it was very labour-intensive and careful, and far more representational. I used to get bogged down in detail.”

The change came when an injury, coupled with arthritis, caused a joint in his thumb to fuse.

“Suddenly I couldn’t work meticulously. He was working as a school teacher at the time, and used to paint the sets for his school’s plays. This massive-scale work, coupled with the loss of his thumb joint, forced him to stop being meticulous and start working more expansively. Today he prefers working on large canvases.

“I think that comes from enjoying doing the sets so much,” he says.

Roberts stopped teaching two years ago and is still relishing the freedom to paint as much as he likes. He has become more productive, which is a good thing because it coincides with a huge surge in his popularity. In the past 18 months he has held several sell-out shows both in Wales and England, where his work has found a keen new audience.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I exhibited there because the work is so Welsh, but everyone seemed to enjoy the fact it was so dramatic and in your face compared with what they’d normally see in the Cotswolds.”

MCST to encourage research on floating solar panels

The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) has taken a decision to encourage research on floating solar panels, with a view to try overcoming certain hurdles when it comes to setting up such systems in open sea.

Speaking during a presentation of the MCST annual report at Villa Bighi in Kalkara, chairman Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando said that the idea is to direct research in a new area that could have certain benefits, particularly in terms of space availability.

Dr Pullicino Orlando said floating solar panels have only been used in closed water spaces and fresh water so far; the sea poses certain challenges such as the high salinity of the water, which could cause the solar panel equipment to corrode.

Science News website ScienceDaily reported earlier this year that floating solar power plants are about to overcome challenges related to the development of solar power plants, such as limited land space and the high costs related to the fabrication and maintenance of solar cells.

Dr Pullicino Orlando spoke about various activities in which MCST is involved, including the development of the National Interactive Science Centre, which will be located at a site in a poor state of repair, next door to Villa Bighi.

MCST vice-chairman and CEO Nicholas Sammut, on his part, said the organisation has grown three-fold in a matter of a few months, and it is already starting to deliver results. The recent restructuring of the entity has increased the operational capacity of the existing MCST units.

The outline development permit for the National Interactive Science Centre has been issued and MCST is in the process of selecting hands-on exhibits and activities for the centre. The project has been allocated an initial fund of €1.5 million.

"The aim will be to provide a fun experience for children and families, and eventually to encourage more children to choose science related subjects. There is a perception that science subjects are more difficult than other subjects, but this is not necessarily true."

It's The Little Things That Count

Trying to wrap your mind around the scope of the destruction left behind in the wake of the April 27 tornado is almost impossible. So today was spent on the little things both figuratively and literally.Prior to Aion Kinah I leaned toward the former,


The day got started with a clinic for nearly 20 underprivileged kids who were displaced by the tornado. Three hours later, I think it's safe to say that both groups came away all the better for the experience.These girls have never had a Cold Sore in their lives!The additions focus on key tag and plastic card combinations, The kids picked up some football fundamentals while hearing from the players about the hard work, dedication and the necessity of staying on the right path in order to achieve your goals and dreams. After saying goodbye to the very appreciative kids and signing quite a few autographs, the players headed across town for one last volunteer activity through Temporary Emergency Services. On a wall in the orientation area, there was a map showing the various cities, states and countries from which the scores of volunteers had come over the past three months. It was truly humbling to add our names to the list.


Just as we had the day before, we had the great fortune of working with another group of fine people. Our work today reminded us of all the little day-to-day items that most of us take for granted. We spent the afternoon sorting boxes in a warehouse that included everything from clothes, to bedding, to bottled water all of which had been donated. We even hauled 15 bags of stuffed animals from another location.


Helping build a house was a special opportunity Friday, but in many ways today was just as eye opening because it drove home the reality that thousands of people, while fortunate to escape the storm with their lives, lost everything they had.


After a quick tour of the University of Alabama campus, including a stop at Bryant-Denny Stadium where the Golden Flashes and Crimson Tide will square off on Sept. 3, it was back to the hotel for a shower and some down time.


Then it was off to Dreamland for the only part of the day that wasn't little. An iconic part of the Tuscaloosa landscape, Dreamland serves up hearty portions of ribs, sweet tea and quite possibly the best banana pudding you'll find anywhere.


As we have for the past two days, we encountered a number of people in the restaurant who were extremely grateful for what we were doing. It was truly heartwarming to hear their comments and really reinforced that while our contribution was a seemingly small one, it was making a difference in the lives of many.


As the table next to us got up to leave, one of the gentlemen said "Roll Tide and Go Flashes!" Thanks to all the wonderful people we've encountered over the past couple of days for making us feel right at home. It's an experience we'll never forget.

Danbury High calm after food fight

Danbury High School was back to a sense of calm Monday, minus 21 students suspended for the last five days of the school year for their part in a food fight Friday.

A senior prank in which hundreds of plastic cups of water were lined up in the hallway of the Freshmen Academy before classes was not related to a food fight later in the morning in the cafeteria and courtyard, Principal Robert Rossi said Monday.

The incident Friday escalated from a water fight to a food fight and lasted for more than a lunch period before everyone was sent back to class.
