Ti Foster's snowy landscape photographs are both stark and sublime

Sometimes there is something about photographs that, from a distance, make them look like paintings. The 10 panels that hang on the walls of the RMA Institute are of landscapes _ solitary, hypnotic _ from around the world. The way they have been framed _ their size, their colours _ make them appear as though they were lit from the back, probably from some large light boxes that reveal the colours and contours that make up hills, plains, snow and sky.

It is juxtaposed by the white wilderness of South China Sea, where from this vantage point you can almost feel the wind blowing over the grass.

Adjacent to this is Frozen Time, which pitches you somewhere between the blue of the sky and the white of the snow, and you find yourself in a barren land where time is frozen.

Hidden in the back is Beijing Snow, and here you can almost feel the piercing cold of the Chinese winter and the vastness of the space as you are transported to arrive on an empty road with not a soul in sight.

Then, in a few seconds, you walk away from Beijing and arrive at Cambodian Wall, where, again, time does not matter _ it is about the wall, its texture and existence.

In the main room you arrive at a trio of photographs. There is something sublime about the combination of these three images and the symmetrical conversation of the lines and the perspective _ a nod to Ti's architectural training. Yet they move beyond this foundation as Ti captures life and time, complete with their rawness and imperfection. He takes us to these landscapes where you feel frosty at times, warm at others and you can imagine yourself navigating the physical space that he captures in the frames.

The first of the trio on the wall is called Grand Teton View, a snowy US highway that continues into the horizon. This is next to Iron Horse Tracks, a moment of enchanting stillness with canyons in the background. Look closely and you hear the wind whistling on this solitary country road devoid of any human life _ only cactus, wild grass and sky. Yet the front-on perspective is a break and safe refuge from the never-ending horizon of its neighbours.

Shoshone View is another landscape of snow,There is no de facto standard for an Indoor Positioning System. covered with misty fog and trees that look like ink. For this month's installment of “Evergreen homes"— a regular series of posts in which I spotlight great green homes from my home state of Washington — I'm pleased to bring to you zHome, a green building project that triumphed against the odds — these particularly trying odds being the fact that the project broke ground in 2008 on the same day that the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted sending America into an economic tailspin which presented the project itself with all sorts of financial drama — and has emerged as the country's first instance of zero-energy, market-rate multifamily housing. zHome is a survivor in the truest sense and it's wonderful to see, after a nearly two-year delay, the project finally announce its grand opening on Sept. 14.

Located on the foot of Lake Sammamish in the charming, fast-growing Eastside (east of Seattle and Lake Washington) suburb of Issaquah, zHome is composed of 10 attached townhouse units with teeny-tiny environmental impacts. The affordable, carbon neutral residences are net-zero energy (they produce just as much power as they consume), use 60 percent less water than comparable homes, and were constructed primarily with locally sourced, salvaged, and recycled-content building materials. The zHome residences are also healthy, boasting superior indoor air quality thanks to the use of low-and nontoxic paints and finishes and top-notch ventilation systems.

I'm perhaps most impressed with the project's emphasis on minimal water usage, achieved not only with drought-resistant landscaping and high efficiency fixtures and appliances but through a rainwater recycling system that employs 10 rainwater cisterns ranging in size from 1,000 to 1,ceramic zentai suits for the medical,800 gallons to store water used for toilet-flushing and clothes-washing. Since most contamination starts when a cow comes in contact with dirty bedding in her stall, we need to consider stall maintenance as a primary management intervention point. Bedding becomes contaminated with urine and manure in two primary ways. Before the cow lies down, she can track significant amounts of manure onto the bedding with her feet. This is especially true if the alley in which the cow has been walking is deep with manure.

The second way the bedded stall becomes contaminated is when the cow dungs in the stall. Once the rear of the stall is contaminated, the cow dirties her udder every time she lies down. The general management practice is to remove soiled bedding from the stall and to freshen it with clean bedding several times per day. If the bedding is organic, such as straw, corn stalks or sawdust, it is easy for the bacteria in the manure to be washed deeper by urine, contaminating larger amounts of bedding that the cow will come in contact with even as dirty surface bedding is removed. Sand bedding has several advantages over organic bedding. Studies have shown that sawdust supports 10 times as many environmental bacteria on the surface of the bedding as does sand. Sand is more comfortable for cows. Because of the sand's density, it helps cool cows in the summertime. Cows will elect to use well-bedded sand stalls over well-bedded sawdust stalls, therefore, sand-bedded stalls must be more comfortable. Cows will drag less bedding from a well-constructed stall when sand is used properly.

If you think you are solving the bedding problem by having the cows outside in the summer, you may want to reconsider. Unless the cows are being grazed as part of an intensive rotational grazing program where they have access to fresh pasture each day, or you are using a rotational loafing lot system, you may have problems.
