He's successfully juggling family life with a full-time teaching career in the Steelton-Highspire School District and a busy, but rewarding, part-time job as the head men's basketball coach at Penn State Harrisburg, where he's turned a once-floundering program into a championship-level one.

The two-year study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, concluded that a single stab from an auto-injector was more effective in stopping a prolonged seizure than the traditional method of inserting an intravenous line and delivering the drug directly into the bloodstream.

The results probably will change how such seizures, which can be life-threatening if they're not stopped right away, are treated by paramedics. Some seizures, known as status epilepticus or prolonged seizures, can last several minutes or longer, and they may require drugs to stop them. More than 50,000 people in the United States die from prolonged seizures every year, either from brain damage due to the seizure itself or from accidents related to passing out mid-attack.

The study, which was funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health,Overview description of rapid Tooling processes. involved 79 hospitals nationwide, including several in the Bay Area. More than 4,000 paramedics were trained to participate in the study and 893 patients were treated.

Every patient was given both the auto-injector shot, usually to the thigh, and an intravenous injection. Neither patients nor paramedics knew which treatment was the placebo in any given case.

Researchers found that 73 percent of patients who were given the auto-injector drug had stopped seizing by the time they reached the emergency room; 63 percent of patients who got the IV drug were seizure-free.

Patients who were given the auto-injector drug were less likely than the IV group to be admitted to the hospital after their seizure.

"This (auto-injection) should be the new standard of care," said Dr. James Quinn, a professor of surgery and emergency medicine at Stanford who led the study there. "It's great when you can do a study and it's probably going to change how we do things."

Although two different drugs were used in the trial - midazolam for the auto-injector and lorazepam for the intravenous injection - researchers don't believe that the drugs made a difference in how effective the treatments were. Rather, they said, the auto-injectors are simply easier to use.

It's much simpler to give a single shot than to try to start an intravenous line on a patient who is actively convulsing, doctors and paramedics said. In the study, 42 patients did not receive the intravenous treatment because the paramedic couldn't start the IV, whereas only five patients didn't receive the auto-injector shot because the syringe malfunctioned.

"It takes time to set up an IV. You have to find a vein that's going to be good, you have to isolate the arm and hold it still, you have to clean the arm, you have to insert the needle," said Judy Klofstad, a paramedic with the San Francisco Fire Department who participated in the study. "If you're really good, it can take 2 1/2 minutes."

Paramedics took on average just 20 seconds to use the auto-injector, according to the study. "You just hold their thigh down, target it, and it can go right through their clothing, through jeans even," Klofstad said.

But Tiffany Manning, who has epilepsy and suffers a prolonged seizure every two or three months, said she's excited about someday being able to carry around an auto-injector. Her doctor at the UCSF epilepsy clinic has prescribed an oral drug that her parents can give her when she has a seizure, but it can be time-consuming and difficult to measure out the proper dosage and make sure she swallows it, she said.

Modesto man convicted of sexual battery, carjacking

A 21-year-old Modesto man has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for forcing his way into an intoxicated woman's car, taking the wheel and fondling the victim before leaving her behind in an orchard and driving away in her car.

Prosecutors said Flanagan pushed her out of the car and drove away as the victim held on to her car's side mirror. She was dragged for about 20 feet. She then ran to a nearby house and called 911.

Also Friday, the district attorney's office released details about another criminal case that resulted in a conviction.

A jury on Jan. 18 found Alvin Leo Byers Jr., 46, guilty of possession of a stolen vehicle, burglary tools, and a hypodermic needle and syringe. Byers had five prior convictions.

About 3 p.m. Sept. 7, an officer spotted Byers driving a 1987 tan Mazda B2000 pickup near Amador Avenue and Eureka Street in south Modesto. The pickup was reported stolen the day before in Modesto.

Trash piling up on Osgood Street land; town 'keeping an eye' on home

Hundreds of filled trash bags, some in piles six feet tall, lay on the front lawn of an Osgood Street property. Neighbors would like to see the town take action, but the health director says the piles do not represent a health hazard.

The property is owned by Susan Odle, currently a Manchester, N.H. resident with property in Andover, Methuen and Westford, Mass. In addition to 118 Osgood St., Odle owns an Andover condominium at 38 Michael Way that was recently condemned by the town, according to Tom Carbone, Andover's health director.

Odle couldn't be located or reached for comment and the Townsman could not find a listed phone number for her. A letter left at the Osgood Street property requesting comment generated no response.

Residents who live near the Osgood Street property, say their home values are being harmed by the escalating problem and believe it is time for the town to do something.

"We've lived here for nine years and said nothing," said Maureen Brogan, who lives down the road at 85 Osgood St. During that time, trash collected inside the house, more than a dozen sheds and a barn-like structure on the property. The piles in the front yard were the final straw, said Brogan.

It is believed that nobody is living in the Osgood Street home currently, according to Carbone.

The situation there is not the first incident of Andoverites speaking out against a so-called blight property in their neighborhood. In the last half decade, Kirkland Drive residents upset with the condition of a home on their street have twice gone to Town Meeting seeking to add controls that would force residents to kee their property up to some kind of standard. Another property on Elm Street owned by a self-described hoarder also received attention in 2008 after its condition made responding to a fire inside the home difficult.

Following the condemnation of Odle's Michael Way condo, the trash being discarded by cleaners was collected by Odle, according to Carbone. Using U-Haul moving vans, Odle brought the bags to her Osgood Street property, where they are now, he said.

At first, Apple Blossom Road resident Tara Summers thought the bags piling up on the property was an indication that Odle was cleaning out her home.

But the situation was the complete opposite, according to Summers.

"What she did is she took all of the trash bags, all the trash from there and dropped it on the front lawn of Osgood Street," said Summers. "The whole lot is full of trash bags."

Bill Brogan, who also lives at Osgood Street, said he was surprised when they learned where the bags were coming from.

"No one was aware that that was trash from another property," said Bill Brogan. "We would just wake up, and there would be massive piles."

It isn't exactly known what is in the bags. Carbone believes it is just items from the Michael Way condo in general.

As far as the major supermarket retailers on the island go, most at least have a policy of keeping plastic bags ‘out of sight’ under the till unless requested by customers, with more environmentally friendly alternatives prominently displayed.

Marks & Spencer presently leads the way however, as the Douglas store charges 5p for each plastic bag given out. All the money goes to Groundwork, a UK environmental regeneration charity.

The charge for shopping bags was rolled out across M&S’s British Isles outlets after a trial in 50 of its stores in Northern Ireland and south-west England, which resulted in demand for polythene bags falling by more than 70 per cent. If that figure was replicated across the Marks & Spencer empire, 280 million fewer plastic bags would be used each year.

In May 2009 Castletown Commissioners were considering the possibility of banning plastic bags altogether from the town’s shops.

Chairman Alwyn Collister said the bags don’t burn particularly well in the incinerator, and they should appeal to the people of the town to curb their use. The commissioners eventually conceded they could not force a ban, and the expense of alternatives to plastic, on local traders.

"You Don't Know Me" finds the subject nastily berating a former spouse for failing to address his needs. "Battle of Who Could Care Less" finds the subject dismissing an unnamed slacker. "Landed" again finds the song's central character admonishing a partner for failing to live up to his expectations. Yet across all 61 tracks, there doesn't seem to be a single song where the narrator exclaims, "Man, I blew it this time" or "it's all my fault."

Indeed, in sharp contrast to the lovey-dovey songs which are present on the disc, a vengeful creature seems to emerge from between the piano keys. It seems that with such a bilious thing lurking on some tracks, even those tracks which profess a purity, such as the ode to permanent love on "The Luckiest," one wonders just how much of that sentiment is transient or even deceptive. In a way, this gives the music an even more complex depth then would be found on a separate reading. Furthermore, it gives a new, and possibly troublesome insight into the real Ben Folds, who despite having written some timeless modern love song, has seen four marriages to date.

When not to ignore a sore throat

With or without a full-blown cold, a sore throat is an annoyance that many people experience often – and one that is often ignored in hopes that it will just go away after a few days.

It may start off as just a bit scratchy; something you can handle.

Then you may notice an excess amount of mucous in the throat area; additional irritation, but you still can bear it.

Then the soreness may even go on to include swollen lymph nodes.

Before you know it, this “annoyance” that you thought would go away soon has turned into a full blown infection that cannot be cured by simply taking cold medicine or gargling with salt water.

So when is it important to visit a doctor and have a sore throat checked out?

The Citizen spoke with Dr. Michael Sotak, lead physician at the newly opened Sutter Urgent Care center in Elk Grove.

Sotak specializes in emergency medicine and mentioned that although most sore throats do go away by themselves, there are crucial times when one should visit a doctor to have it checked for a more serious condition.

“I’d recommend getting an exam if you notice a fever over 102 degrees, that there is puss at the back of the tonsils, the glands at the front of your throat are swollen, or you are not having a cough along with your sore throat,” he said. “If you have at least two of these symptoms, it is best to get checked out as soon as possible.”

Although many people may be quick to assume that a noticed lump on the throat during soreness may be the sign of cancer, Sotak said that it is rarely the case.

But he mentioned that strep throat could lead to serious issues if left without treatment beyond seven days.

Sotak said that in some cases the abscess will get worse and worse until it ruptures, but it is often treated by being drained before this occurs.

These are obviously the more serious conditions of leaving a sore throat untreated for too long, yet they indicate why a rapid strep test should be done if soreness lasts for more thana week.

Sotak said that the test lasts for about five to eight minutes and includes the rubbing of a swab on both tonsils. A color-coded result signals a negative or positive outcome and it appears in about 10 minutes after the test is done.

“Nine out of 10 times you will just need to get treated with antibiotics,” Sotak said.

City weighs options for senior center

The Reidsville Senior Center temporarily closed last month due to mold infestation at the Parks and Recreation building, and now city officials are trying to come up with a plan on how to rectify the situation.

The mold was most likely caused by a leak where water was able to seep into the building over the years and eventually grew mold spores, according to Tom Wiggins, assistant city manager for community development and parks and recreation.

The top level of the building was deemed free from mold, but the bottom level of the building has the infestation. In order to make repairs many things need to be done, which could cost tens of thousands of dollars, though the city is waiting to hear back on an official estimate.

Wiggins said repairs will include removing the mold and mildew, removing dry wall, ceiling tiles, carpeting, flooring and having the HVAC system for the basement scrubbed.

The next costs will involve having another contractor repair leaks below grade, excavation to make the repairs and possibly installing a drainage system.

After that, costs will include replacing the walls and paint and putting back wood paneling. There is also a leak in the roof which is under control upstairs, but could be leaking to the basement. This will also need to be addressed.

Wiggins said the question the city needs to know is what the cost will be to repair the building.

“We have a building over there from the 1950s,” Wiggins said. “Does it make sense to reinvest all that money back into an old building?”

Wiggins is also looking at the building’s lack of parking and lighting, as well as the access to the building as the city determines where to go from here.

Mayor James K. Festerman said at this point the city is still in the investigative states and is determining where the problem came from and the cost to rebuild or renovate the building.Shop at Lowe's for garage Ceramic tile,

Festerman said at this point he would like to see a new building come about if it’s cost-effective.

“I’m not interested in putting a Band-Aid on but permanently fixing the problem,” Festerman said.

Talking with Major Robbie Robbins of the Salvation Army last week, Wiggins found the Salvation Army is looking to build a new community building complete with a gym, and the Salvation Army is willing to have conversations with the city about a joint usage of the space.

Robbins is already helping solve some of the issues the city had with the senior center in the short term. The organization has taken in the seniors for most of their programs, excluding dance and fitness, in their community building facility and is also housing their Meals on Wheels program inside their building’s fellowship hall.

“I owe the Salvation Army a lot of credit and thanks to Major Robbie Robbins for allowing us to use their fellowship hall in their main building for the Meals (on Wheels) program,” Wiggins said.

“It’s great to know we could help them in their time of need,” Robbins said.

A second option for the community is to partner with Lee Covington and the Aging, Disability and Transit Services of Rockingham County. Covington serves as executive director there and said Wiggins believes a “day care” for seniors will quickly become a greater need as the baby boomer generation begins to retire.

Partnering with Covington can mean a greater chance of receiving grants to fund a building, but also allows for multiple purposes for the community to be housed in one building.

“We’re willing to help be partners with anyone who will help fulfill our mission,” Covington said.

Wiggins said both conversations happened loosely and no plans have even begun being made, but they are options worth looking into.

For now, Wiggins is looking at the costs of repairs and expects to have an estimate on the costs within the next few weeks.

Wiggins is also working to finalize a memorandum of understanding with the Salvation Army to show what their plans are for the city’s usage of that organization’s space while they evaluate the senior center. Once this is finalized and agreed upon, the city plans to release more information to citizens about their plans.

Wiggins said many members of the fitness center have been left hanging as to where they can work out until the problem is resolved. Wiggins said he is working on a solution, whether it involves moving the fitness equipment to another location or partnering with a facility such as the YMCA to house the members until then.

Visits with friends including catching up over coffee, lunches and dinners out, or lunch in eating pizza’s created by the kids. Who knew that when you are 6 years old, dough with one tiny piece of chicken in the middle of it would be deemed a culinary delight!

Kids also enjoyed the friend visits with sleep-overs and other assorted activities.
Of course there was new book reading, board and video game playing in the mix. Did you know that adult semi-arthritic hands are just not meant for game controllers? Fine motor skills are over-rated anyway right?

House, closet and garage cleaning. Sounds boring but actually was very satisfying and soul “cleansing.”
Bowling at Old Mountain Lanes was a big hit one day and included having a great lunch for a great price at Camden’s.

A short trip to the Submarine Museum in Groton was something different and very cool. Exercising/Zumba was more of a challenge than anticipated but getting and keeping in shape is a challenge worth conquering again and again. Although one of us has missed the first two classes of the New Year but given that there are still 51 more weeks in the year to go, all is not yet lost!

Getting organized is off to a good start with a full dumpster from garage, shed and “deep” house cleaning successfully accomplished for one! Closet purging and donating wearable clothes is still ongoing for others.
Saving money or just spending less has been going okay thanks to gift certificates received and already cashed in on some of those dinners out. Rand forecast to firm

South Africa's rand is expected to firm more than 3 percent to 7.825 per dollar in twelve months, a Reuters poll showed, but that is dependent on a solution to Europe's debt crisis and a pickup in global growth this year.

The rand was one of the world's worst performing currencies last year, losing roughly 22 percent against the dollar as investors spooked by a spiralling crisis in Europe pulled out of riskier emerging markets.

The survey of 34 foreign exchange analysts and economists forecast the rand would weaken against the dollar to 8.335 in 3 months from roughly 8.18 on Thursday, recover to 8.215 in 6 months and climb back to 7.825 in a year.

The last survey had a more bullish strengthening trend for the coming 12 months than the current survey, 8.1 in three months, 8.0 in six months and 7.68 in twelve months.

Local governments use the word “executive session” when they meet in secret, because it just sounds better. But it’s still only a closed-door meeting where the public isn’t welcome for various reasons.

The Chippewa Falls City Council met for about 90 minutes Tuesday night in one of those sessions, talking about the city’s plans to redevelop the entrance areas to downtown.

The council went into the secret session about 7 p.m. Several people associated with the development plans were excluded and waited outside in the adjoining hallway.

With weather turning cold

After watching Eli Manning carry the offense with his arm for the first three quarters of the season, the New York Giants are finally showing signs of life in the run game.

Brandon Jacobs was outstanding in the game, rushing 19 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the comeback win that vaulted the Giants into first-place in the NFC East.

New York — still ranked last in the league in rushing offense, averaging 85.8 yards — had gained 100 yards rushing against Green Bay, after failing to hit the century mark in the three previous games.

The big difference seems to be new line, the fifth starting combination used this season.

David Diehl was moved from left guard to left tackle three games ago after Will Beatty suffered a detached retina. And then, the left guard and center positions were switched the following week when David Baas suffered from severe headaches and continuing neck problems.

That forced offensive line coach Pat Flaherty to move Kevin Boothe from left guard to center, with second-year pro Mitch Petrus taking over the guard spot. Chris Snee and Kareem McKenzie remain at the right guard and tackle spots, respectively.

The line opened a couple of excellent holes that allowed Jacobs to get through the first level with some speed and forced the Cowboys defensive backs to come up and stop the 260-pound back.

"I think we have guys in the right place," Jacobs said. "I think guys are working hard and doing everything they can to make the run game work. I think the offensive line is doing a fabulous job of moving people out of the way and I think E (Eli) is doing a great job of getting us in things that we need to be in. Our coaches are confident in what we are doing and I am confident in what we are doing.

"We just have to keep going."

Jacobs also ran as hard as he has all season in getting most of the carries with Ahmad Bradshaw sitting in the first half because of disciplinary reasons. There were no signs of the hamstring injury that bothered him for a couple of weeks.

Redskins defensive tackle Barry Cofield, a former Giant, said watching New York's run game is a shocking, considering Tom Coughlin's team always was among the league leaders.

Having a run game will make Manning twice as dangerous in a season in which he has already thrown for 4,105 yards and 25 touchdowns.

"It's a different team. It's just a completely different look. They're playing differently," Cofield said. Longtime homesteaders decide they've picked up pieces too often

Once inside her century-old farmhouse, Phyllis Buchanan steps into the bright yellow kitchen where she used to bake two dozen loaves of bread a week to feed her 11 children. Looking around the bare room now, she shakes her head and combs several fingers through wavy, snow-white hair.

"How many dances have we had on that floor? How many parties?" she says, shoving her veiny hands into the pockets of a loose-fitting grey cardigan, a gift from her daughter last Christmas.

"A lot of memories here."

This is where she raised and gave birth to seven daughters and four sons.

The large enamel wood stove that cooked their meals and kept the family warm during the harsh New Brunswick winters is long gone and, at 99, Buchanan hasn't baked bread in years.

Soon, she says, the house will be gone too.

Buchanan knows the wood-framed homestead, painted forest green in recent years, will be torn down by the provincial government as part of its plan to turn a portion of flood-prone Bonny River,Our company focus on manufacturing Plastic mould , Second Falls and St. George into uninhabited land along the Magaguadavic River in southwestern New Brunswick.

The home at 1215 Route 770 has been in the family for nearly 70 years.

Over the decades, it has weathered many storms and withstood regular flooding from the Magaguadavic, which flows about a dozen metres in front of the house.

"I went through a good many floods and I never had to move away," Buchanan says. "We cleaned everything up. I've shoveled the ice up off my kitchen floor. My bath tub would be full of sand."

"We never thought of leaving," says Buchanan.

But her homestead's long-held resistance to flooding was washed away last Dec. 13, when heavy rainfall caused one of the most expensive natural disasters in New Brunswick history.

The storm caused an estimated $35 million in damages to homes, businesses and infrastructure such as roads and bridges in southwestern and central New Brunswick.

In an effort to limit future impacts, the government has since bought out 22 properties, 12 of which are located in Charlotte County, to urge residents to move to land farther away from the flood-prone areas.

The old Buchanan homestead, the nearby homes of her daughter, Charlotte Norman, and grandson, Glenn Norman, were all severely damaged by the flood. The flood uprooted this close-knit family, whose members have lived alongside the Magaguadavic River in the Second Falls and Bonny River area for generations.

On this grey afternoon in June, this is the final time Buchanan, who had in recent years been living on Lake Utopia with her daughter Chrystal Shaw, will see the family homestead before it's stripped to the ground.

Inside, the house is gutted down to the old pine board floors and there's a faint smell of mould.

White-painted kitchen cupboards have been removed and are lying on their side on the floor in the yellow kitchen.

The walls are bare, except for a red and gold shiny "Merry Christmas" banner hanging in the porch, an eerie reminder of when the flood occurred last year.

The property, which sits on less than a half acre, will soon be converted to Crown land.

Phyllis Buchanan had just given birth at home in Second Falls to her 10th child, a healthy baby boy, in December 1951 when the Magaguadavic River flooded its banks and was pushing up against her front step.

Inside her first-floor bedroom, she was lying in bed, breastfeeding her day-old son, Duane, when the waters came rushing.

"They wanted me to leave the house, but I wouldn't," she recalls.Bathroom Floor tiles at Great Prices from Topps Tiles. "If you stepped off the front step, you had to step into a boat."

It wasn't the first time the river had come up to her front door so Buchanan stayed with her baby until the waters receded a couple of days later.

Her father, Daniel Kinney, came to the area from a few kilometres north of Second Falls to work in the woods to supply the sawmills that operated around St. George in the late 1800s.

Workers' camp to blow out town 50%

SLEEPY Springsure's population could effectively explode by 50% overnight if the Central Highlands council grants approval to a 416-unit workers' accommodation camp.

After bedding down in other Bowen Basin resource towns, the contentious camps are launching an invasion on Emerald and surrounds, with development applications for 2000 units soon to come before the Central Highlands council, and another 3000 for Blackwater.

He described the Springsure camp as major for its potential

"In Blackwater there is 3000-plus being proposed and over 2000-plus in Emerald for different projects.

"There have been pre-lodgement meetings…a meeting with a workers accommodation developer of a motel and commercial precinct.

"Other projects have been discussed with council officers in relation to camps.

"These proposals are yet to result in the lodgement of any development application."

Mayor Peter Maguire conceded the march of camps into Emerald and surrounds was inevitable.

"Yes, in my view, the camps are inevitable," he said.

"What I would like to see done to minimise the impact is companies to give people a choice about whether they want to be FIFO, DIDO, or live in communities."

Other major development proposals before the Central Highlands council include:

A 1000-lot housing subdivision from Citricorp on Pilot Farm Rd is shortly due before council for approval. The first stage will release 103 lots to the market.

A 74-lot industrial lot subdivision on Bonnie Doon Rd, behind the Yamala cotton gin. Councillors are concerned the average 2000sq m lots are too small for heavy industry.

A 896-unit workers accommodation camp in Yackam Rd, Blackwater, proposed by Transpac.

"In terms of its scale, it is a significant project we're assessing at the moment," Mr Lankowski said.

"The development application will come to council in another couple of months."

Xstrata has lodged a development application for another 350 units in its existing Rolleston Mine camp, doubling its size for a planned expansion of mine output.

A 170-lot rural residential subdivision on Big John Rd. Portfolio Projects, already active in Emerald, has lodged a reconfiguration of lot application. It is an area not connected to town water.

Cuposa Pty Ltd has asked to extend the time limit to start building a $6m tavern in Capella.

Local pros share favorite tools, ingredients for holiday sweets

For Arneishea Owens, who runs Madarn's Bake House from her Cooper-Young home, baking is more than a business. She learned it as a child, watching her grandmother. Like many bakers, she was seduced by the smell before she became committed to the process.

"The aroma was so captivating and hypnotizing; the smells would draw me into the kitchen," she says.

Owens began asking questions, and her grandmother would take her time explaining the purpose of each ingredient.

Now, Owens bakes every day. She sells 20 to 24 cakes a month, and her best-seller is the Back in the Day Pound Cake, which is her great-grandmother's recipe. "The cake is so light and fluffy that it dissolves through your taste buds," she says. "I want to bottle the aroma and wear it as perfume!"

As you prepare for holiday baking, take inspiration from Owens and other local bakers.

For Owens, the most important ingredient is a creative mind -- and patience. She believes that fancy or unusual ingredients aren't necessary for great baking.

"There are endless possibilities of what can be created using eggs, milk, butter, baking powder or soda and flavoring," she says.

Jimmy Hoxie, a chef and baker who also lives in Midtown, attended Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, S.C., and taught at L'Ecole Culinaire. Baking was one of his stronger classes. "I love the smells that waft out of the oven, creating new recipes in my brain and trying them out until I get them right, and sharing my new finds or old favorites with friends and family," he says.

Like Owens, Hoxie has some really old family recipes he loves.

"In our family, it's my great-grandmother's recipe for kuchen that I helped my grandmother make as I was growing up," he says. "The smell of the yeast mixed with the cinnamon and butter and the slight smokey scent of the sugar brings me back to my grandmother's kitchen every time."

His advice for bakers is to learn the basics. "Once you have mastered a basic pastry dough, you can expand on it. Try adding some finely chopped herbs or curry powder. Let your imagination run wild."

He's insistent about one thing -- butter. "Always use real butter. Margarine is the closest thing to plastic that is consumed by humans," he says.

"Lard also has its place, especially in pie crusts and biscuits."

Finally, Hoxie says that artificial flavorings are a waste of time and money. "Go real, or don't go at all," he says.

Kat Gordon, owner of Muddy's Bake Shop, has been "messing around" in the kitchen since she could walk. "The best thing my parents did for me was teach me that a mistake made while cooking is not a big deal, so I felt free to bravely experiment," Gordon says. "I learned a lot from failure and still do!"

She advises making notes in your recipe books and reading the introductions in cookbooks. "Authors put a lot of good stuff in there about the methods they use, and it could save you a lot of heartache and wasted sugar."

Gordon's pantry staples include King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour, which she notes is the best all-around flour she has found. Farm-fresh eggs (hers are from Donnell Farm in Jackson,This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their Floor tiles . Tenn.) are a must. "A 'large' egg should measure about 1/4 cup, so if you're using fresh eggs of different sizes, just crack and whisk 'em, then measure out what you need," she says.Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems,

When a recipe calls for milk, Gordon says it means whole milk. Semi-sweet chocolate chips melt quickly, and they can be easily substituted for other chocolates. Fresh herbs and spices like allspice, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, anise, clove, cardamom, rosemary, sage, thyme and peppermint are great for baked goods.

Gordon is a fan of Nielsen Massey Vanilla Extract or Miss Mildred's Wicked Vanilla (homemade at Muddy's by a friend). She notes "double strength" vanilla will throw off your measurements if you are using a recipe.

Finally, she recommends parchment paper. "Wax paper is not the same." Parchment paper can be used to line cookie sheets and cake pans and to put underneath cookies while icing them.which applies to the first offshore merchant account only, Gordon also likes to tear off a piece to put on the counter for easy cleanup of her batter-covered spatulas,ceramic magic cube for the medical, dirty measuring cups and other tools as she bakes.

All the bakers have certain tools that are indispensable.

Owens makes perfect cupcakes and cookies by using a 2-ounce trigger ice cream scoop to measure the batter and a butter knife for leveling.

Hoxie's list includes a digital scale, an accurate candy thermometer, a bench scraper (to scoop dough or flour from your work surface), a decent set of pastry tips, parchment paper, a bread stone and commercial half-sheet pans. (The full ones don't fit in most home ovens.)

He advises getting the best you can afford.

Gordon says an oven thermometer is the easiest, cheapest way for anyone to be a better baker. "No one's oven stays calibrated perfectly, and this will ensure that you're baking at the right temperature."

Her favorite thing to bake is pies, followed closely by cookies, so she says a rolling pin is indispensable. "I know the pros like the French pin, but I've always preferred the kind with handles."

Before buying, see what feels better in your hand. "You want it to be comfortable, weighty, big enough to accommodate the dough you're rolling out, but not too big for your counter space," she said.

She uses cookie cutters to cut shapes to top pies, to cut sandwiches for kids' tea parties and to make cookies. Find them inexpensively at estate sales. Pyrex liquid measuring cups a in variety of sizes and vintage Pyrex oven-to-table ware are also favorites. Gordon prefers a balloon whisk and a 10-inch flat rubber spatula, but suggests seeing what feels good to you.Your source for re-usable Plastic moulds of strong latex rubber. Gordon adores the Cuisinart 14-cup food processor her mother gave to her as a Christmas present in college. "I didn't have a stand mixer at home until 2010, but I would've been lost without my trusty food processor," she says. "It can do cookie dough, but it also helps with non-baking tasks like shredding and chopping vegetables." Gordon advises that if you have to pick one piece of expensive equipment, the food processor is it. "Get a cheap hand mixer for icings, etc.," she says.
