Following the ribbon cutting, guests and well-wishers were treated to barbecued burgers and cake served by local and visiting dignitaries.
Kenora architect David Nelson was also on hand to field questions about the project.
"From a design perspective we were just blessed with this wonderful site," Nelson related. "The challenge was being sensitive to the Lake of the Woods location. How do you amplify the natural beauty of the site without taking anything away... and build something that rings true?"
Nelson noted the building incorporates natural materials evocative of Northwestern Ontario; laminated wood beams convey the community's relationship to forestry while the 'tree' column supports are white pine from the Cameron Bay area. While such aspects of the building acknowledge the region's past, other features incorporate modern energy efficiencies. The wide overhanging roof shades and cools the building during the summer months while allowing direct sunlight through the thermal glass windows to illuminate and warm its interior during the winter. The 'passive' heating and cooling is complemented by 'lake loops' which work as a heat pump by utilizing the seasonal temperature differential of lake water to assist the building's boiler and environmental systems to circulate warm or cool liquid according to season through tubing in walls, and the ceramic porcelain tile floor,.Whilst magic cube are not deadly,
