Landmark for sweets

The sign “Welcome, Sweet People” on the canopy outside Nagel’s Candy Barn seems a fitting greeting, especially given the longtime bonds that develop between this store and its customers.

A fixture on Route 10 since 1974, the shop evokes warm stories of family and favorite candies received for holidays and other special occasions.

“My mother used to come for the dark chocolate almond bark,” said Mindy Kemp of Rockaway, a nine-year employee, as she filled a shaped box with freshly made chocolates. “It was always a special thing to get candy from here.”

The seducing aroma of chocolate being blended in the store’s kitchens is part of the charm, and can’t help but captivate patrons — as do the countless candy selections neatly displayed in trays, jars and showcases. The Transaction Group offers the best high risk merchant account services,

“Anything you can dip in chocolate, they do,” said Pat Wescott of Wharton, a nearly 20-year customer. Wescott’s first order of business was buying a box of chocolate-covered maple creams for her daughter-in-law in Virginia.

Then it was time for a little self-indulgence, which prompted Wescott to seek out dark chocolates filled with raspberry jelly. “Everything’s good here,” she said.

Most of the chocolate candies are still manufactured on the premises under the watchful eye of 83-year-old Robert Nagel, the store’s owner, whose seven-day-a-week schedule and adept skills at multitasking would challenge most people half his age.

“You can’t eat a piece of candy here and not tell me what’s inside,” said Nagel,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, as a tub of milk chocolate was spinning,Overview description of rapid Tooling processes.MDC Mould specialized of Injection moulds, trays of honey, rum and vanilla nougat were cooling and ripe strawberries waited their turn to be dipped in chocolate. “It’s all made with love.”

“Once you have this chocolate, you can’t go back to Hershey’s,” said seven-year employee Lori Harris of Dover.

In addition to the Randolph store, Nagel’s continues to operate at its sister location on Route 23 in Wayne — the original Nagel’s Candy Barn — which Nagel built and opened in 1956.
