Levee solves flood puzzle

For decades the Carlingford Street area has been a nightmare when the city receives a deluge.

Residents have been inundated time and time again, but Bathurst Regional Council is now moving to address the situation.

Contained in the confidential papers of this month’s first council meeting for the year were several items relating to compulsory acquisition of properties in that precinct which also includes Beresford,Shop at Lowe's for garage Ceramic tile, Pye and Lea Streets.

Included in the buy up to make way for new flood mitigation levees are lots 37 and 38 in Pye Street; lot 31 Carlingford Street; and lots 32 and 33 in Beresford Street.

Darren Sturgiss from Bathurst Regional Council is driving the Carlingford Street levee project.

He said yesterday council are presently calling tenders for the project which he says will “cost the best part of one million dollars”.

“We’re looking at a levee that will be part concrete in places and earthen walls in others,” Mr Sturgiss said. “It will be about 700 metres long and about 2.5m at its highest point and will run from Alfa Street out around Police Paddock as close as possible to the affected properties before finishing up near the Vale Road.

Mr Sturgiss said design work for levees at Perthville has been completed.

“At Georges Plains there’s plans to widen the creek and do some silt removal, but we are still in the process of applying for funding for that job,” Mr Sturgiss said.
