Lawyer's kitchen provides perfect space for a 'party house'

There's a drawer near the floor of Marty Hollingsworth's kitchen.

It's one of many features that add interest and convenience to the home built in the late 1970s off of Fall Creek Road.

"The house was all electric. I was raised on gas cooking and do not care for electric, so I ran a gas line for the cooktop," said Hollingsworth, who included the fieldstone fireplace in the adjoining family room as part of the gas upgrade.

"My house has become known to my family and friends as the party house," said Hollingsworth, who hosts a number of gatherings, including receptions for the Indianapolis Bar Association.

The cornerstone tiles, like the drawer near the floor, are the signatures of designer Bob Mead.

With the kick of a toe, the drawer extends and offers Hollingsworth a necessary kitchen helper -- a Step-fix ladder by Hailo that helps her reach the top shelves of her cabinets. Custom made by Gary Mears, the cabinets extend to a ceiling that was lowered to create a more intimate space. Maple raised panels, and a spice glaze give a modern feel to cabinetry that includes full extension glides.

But a favorite feature for Hollingsworth is the glass front storage spaces that display her collection of crystal and china -- including a Wedgwood Gold Florentine service. Hollingsworth fondly remembers the same pattern used at King Cole Restaurant and purchased the service for 12 at L.S. Ayres.

To highlight the crystal stemware, Mead included a couple of other design tricks -- the inside of the cabinets are covered in a coat of dark paint, mirrors are added to the base of the shelves and lighting to the top.

"This is a way to really make the crystal sparkle," said Mead.

Hollingsworth chose stainless appliances for her kitchen, including the five-burner gas cooktop, KitchenAid refrigerator and microwave oven and GE Profile dishwasher.

The space includes two ovens with convection and conventional features, and one of Hollingsworth's favorite appliances -- a double-stacked warming oven.

"When I'm making Thanksgiving dinner, hosting a New Year's Eve party or Super Bowl gathering, it's so nice to have two different ovens set at two different temperatures," said Hollingsworth. "I put the casseroles and side dishes in the warming drawers, and when we sit down to dinner, I'll put the pies in."

The space is equally efficient for a crowd as it is for a single homeowner.
