Debit cards being preferred over credit

The State Bank of Pakistan reported that of the total plastic cards in circulation over 86 per cent are debit cards. It means that Pakistanis tend to spend their own money instead of using credit cards.

According to ‘Payment System Review’ issued by the State Bank on Wednesday, share of debit cards is enormously high while growth of credit cards is nominal.Accept all major credit cards using the top rated third party payment gateway.

The credit cards have the share of 9.4 per cent while the ATMs cards acquire a share of 4.2 per cent in the entire plastic cards market.

A banker said one of the reasons for lesser use of credit cards is the high interest rate that ranges from 35 to 40 per cent per annum.

Getting a credit card is easier now than 5 years back but the share of credit cards in the market shows a cold response from general masses.

In total there were 14.5 million plastic cards in circulation by the end of September 2011. The report said during the quarter July-September, 2011 the volume and value of overall e-banking transactions in the country was recorded at 63.7 million and Rs.6.15 trillion respectively showing a decrease of 3.9 per cent in the volume and 1.34 per cent in value as compared to the previous quarter.

According to the report the ATM transactions showed 5.46 per cent decrease in number of transactions and 0.04 per cent decrease in value which resulted in an average value of Rs9,222 per ATM transaction.

The number of Real Time Online Branches (RTOB) decreased by 4.5 per cent, while the value of transactions decreased by 1.7 per cent compared to the previous quarter.

These transactions contributed almost 31 per cent of e-banking transactions and 93 per cent in terms of value respectively.

The major portion of PRISM transactions in terms of value was in respect of settlements against securities which accounted for 56 per cent of the total transactions followed by Inter-bank Funds Transfers at 30 per cent and settlement of retail cheques through multilateral clearing at 14 per cent.
