‘Grow-your-own' classes popular at Great Park farm lab

Two-and-a-half years after installing the Farm & Food Lab demonstration garden at the Great Park, master gardeners are continuing to brainstorm fresh ideas to educate the community about healthy living.

"The little garden has been a really fun thing and it has gone from being just a passive place that people could look at to a place that's reaching out into the community and trying to educate people of all ages, from school kids to grown-ups, about gardening," Master Gardener Teena Spindler said.

"The Gardening Basics for Adults:Growing Edibles" workshop series is the latest class offered at the site, held on the second Thursday of each month.

The free series will run until March.

The first class was Nov. 10 and covered sun, soil, water and fertilizer. That class had about 70 attendees and December's about 80, Spindler said. The large turnout was surprising in the winter, she said, predicting that the series will be repeated during spring and summer to even bigger attendance numbers.Buy oil paintings for sale online.

"A lot of people are really interested in growing their own veggies, eating healthier and getting outside," she said. "We're impacting a lot of people and have a good effect on their health through nutrition."

In addition to the current workshop series, the Master Gardeners of Orange County also holds the "Youth Garden Workshop Series: Creating & Sustaining Your Youth Garden," which will resume in March. The Farm & Food Lab also holds themed children's workshops the first Sunday of each month that run every 20 to 30 minutes, to give kids something to do while their parents shop at the on-site farmer's market.

Saturday seminars also provide hands-on tutorials on gardening topics appropriate for the season. A recent seminar about tomatoes drew 300 attendees, Spindler said.

The Farm & Food Lab is maintained by the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, part of the University of California under the division of agriculture and natural resources. Master gardeners are trained for four months and must complete 25 hours of volunteer service anywhere in Orange County with a connection to gardening, to provide information to the public about gardening.

"The Great Park has been a wonderful fit for us. The Farm & Food Lab gives us a place to showcase gardening through these themed beds and a place to hold classes,Omega Plastics are leading plastic injection moulding and injection mould tooling specialists." Spindler said.

Originally, the demonstration garden was one acre and not entirely open to the public. Today, the garden has become more hands-on and keeps expanding. There is another acre plot adjacent to the garden, which is used to grow strawberries and pumpkins, but will be eventually used to add more exhibits.

The group also has finished constructing a chicken coop and a greenhouse is planed for next year, as is a new community garden where people, for a small fee, will be able to rent their own veggie plot.
