Thankfully, there are occasions when the process is so well thought out that the transition from design concept to dealership showroom delivers a vehicle true to itself. Large LED driving lamps are a very nice feature, floating in the middle of gaping air vents. A secondary grille lies between the massive bumper and a silver-toned lower valance, giving the Evoque a wee bit of a British bulldog look.
The side profile reveals a dramatic profile thanks to the combination of a rising beltline and a very low roofline. The Evoque sits quite high over its 20-inch alloy wheels (Sparkle finish $2,150) which gives a hint of the SUV’s off-road capabilities. The test vehicle had the optional Santorini Black contrast panoramic roof ($730) which comes with black pillars and door frames. With the darkly tinted side windows and brilliant white pearl paint on the body, the Evoque exuded black-tie class.
The rear end naturally has a high kick-up thanks to the short rear window, high beltline and a lower rear valance in the same silver tone as the front. The rear LED tail lights are surprisingly restrained in size compared to many SUVs today, but they perfectly suit the Evoque’s proportions.
The interior design is what you would expect given the exterior styling – bold, sporty and luxurious. Low roofline notwithstanding, the panoramic glass roof admits plenty of ambient light and dispels any fears of claustrophobia. The high window sill does pose a challenge, however, when paying tolls or reaching out for a coffee at a Tim Horton’s drive-through window.
The instruments are logically placed and, thankfully, not concept-car weird. The central eight-inch touch display screen relays all additional information while the 825-watt Surround Sound Audio System by Meridian uses no less than 17 speakers to soothe your soul. There is an additional five-inch TFT colour Driver Information Screen behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Range Rover sourced the Evoque’s power plant from Ford, placing their 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood. With a six-speed automatic transmission and the Si4 all-wheel drive delivering 240 horsepower, the Evoque is adequately quick but not as exciting to drive as the bodywork might suggest. With Drive Select, an advanced rotary gearshift, a large knob rises up from the console when the engine is switched on; gears are selected by turning the knob. Rally-style paddle shifters enable the driver to be proactive in the gear-shifting.
