Kansas end North Carolina's NCAA defence

Back in December, Kansas was scuffling along at 7-3 and simply making the NCAA tournament would have been considered an achievement.

Look where the overachievers are headed now.

Kansas is on its way to the Final Four for the first time since winning it all in 2008, thanks to a clutch performance by Tyshawn Taylor, some stifling defense and the Jayhawks' unshakable belief that they were better than anyone gave them credit for.

Taylor broke out of his scoring slump with 22 points and the Jayhawks handcuffed top-seeded North Carolina for the last 5 1/2 minutes of an 80-67 victory over old coach Roy Williams and the Tar Heels today.

"This would have been a year, if we got to the second weekend (of the tournament), most Kansas fans would be happy. But that's not how those guys think," coach Bill Self said. "They think this is their year, and I'm certainly not going to tell them anything different."

The second-seeded Jayhawks (31-6) will play Ohio State on Sunday (NZ time) in their first Final Four appearance since winning the 2008 national championship.

As the game ended, Taylor - much maligned for his shooting struggles during the first three games of the NCAA tournament - ran to Kansas fans and raised both arms in the air. He recalled when he returned from France after World War I, the bucket was gone and the spring was in a bit of disrepair. He cleaned it up, and kept it that way until he died decades later.

Jan Colbrese steps down from Issaquah School Board after more than a decade

Joining the school board was simply a natural progression of earlier involvement with the Issaquah School District for Jan Colbrese.

After 12 years in office, she attended her last meeting of the district school board Dec. 14, at least as a member of the board.

After the meeting, Colbrese said her time on the board really was a combination of her two passions: education and public service.

“It’s everyone’s job to give back to their community,” she said.

Colbrese announced prior to the November election that she would not run for re-election. She was replaced by Bellevue resident Anne Moore, who took her oath of office Dec. 14 along with board members Brian Deagle and Suzanne Weaver.

Moore is no stranger to the district having served with the PTSA and on various district committees for what she said has been 14 years. Mrs Padmanabhan was also in Chennai this month to return the remains of an illegal worker who died in Satwa.

"There was no one to go with him, so I accompanied the body and handed it over to the family," she said, adding that returning bodies was the most difficult part of her job.

"I am always worried about the family members crying when they see the body. It is the most difficult thing to handle. I feel sad, but I do it with a sense of responsibility to help people. It gives me immense happiness and satisfaction."

Local volunteers hard at work erecting Holiday of Lights display

Crews and volunteers are working away in Bluefield’s Lotito City Park to make sure displays are up and ready for this year’s Holiday of Lights.

Deb Sarver, organizer of the Holiday of Lights, said good weather and plenty of volunteers have helped crews set up displays earlier than anticipated.

“It’s been going very good,” Sarver said. “We’ve had a lot of volunteers. The weather has held out for us, and we are hoping it will continue to do so over the next couple of the days. Right now, we are just going through things and getting things spruced up a little bit. We should hopefully, by the end of this week, have every thing ready except for some of the smaller things. We are probably a week ahead or so of where we were last year.”

According to Sarver, city crews and volunteers are now mainly working on small but important tasks, like replacing bulbs on the massive displays.

“We’ve been through 13,ceramic magic cube for the medical,000 of those plastic cable ties, and I would say we have replaced 10,000 bulbs at least,” she said. “Even today, we are down here working on the arch display on one of the bridges. We are trying to get things lit up so we can check to see where bulbs are needed or have burned out. We are always looking for people to work the gate. You get to take donations and hand out the candy. Usually, the first timers who are working on the gate talk about the wonderful time they’ve had. Most of the time, people get hooked working the gate. People are happy going in, but they are even happier when they come out. You get to see people having a great time and get to meet friends who are out and about. It’s all for a good cause.”

This year, the Holiday of Lights will be taking pet food to donate to local shelters as well as canned food donations on Thanksgiving nights. Visitors can also contribute monetary donations to make sure the Holiday of Lights keeps shining bright.

Falling prices caused by Chinese exports have been blamed not only for Solyndra’s downfall, but also for the bankruptcy filings of US companies Evergreen Solar and SpectraWatt.

The allegations, denied by Klein’s attorney, reverberate painfully for the 66-year-old doctor whose patient list has boasted Elizabeth Taylor, Dolly Parton, Carrie Fisher and many more celebrities.

Media that sometimes camp outside his office have kept away certain high-profile patients, including “royal families from around the world, political dignitaries, people who don’t want to deal with the paparazzi,” Klein said.

But Hollywood’s crowned heads, the actors and others who helped Klein build his practice and his fame, aren’t so faint-hearted. Whether patients or friends, they are speaking up for him.

“If anyone would know, it would have been me,” Fisher said with a rueful laugh. “He’s not one of the doctors you would hit up for (drugs).”

But Murray’s lead defense attorney Ed Chernoff invoked Klein’s name seven times during his opening statement and has referred to the dermatologist repeatedly throughout the trial. Klein’s medical specialty is the use of injectable drugs such as Botox and Restylane to ease wrinkles and sagging skin. It is a skill he pioneered and one that has made him a favorite in Hollywood, where youth and beauty are the currency of the land.

Fisher credits Klein with smoothing her face and restoring her confidence after weight loss took a toll. “He cares about what he does and he loves making people look better,” she said. “It’s like he’s a painter, but the brush is the needle.”

He doesn’t limit his practice to the well-heeled or well-known. The middle-aged patient who was at the end of his needle recently was a woman who wanted, and got, a younger look for dating and business.

Klein has an international reputation, with patients from the Middle East and Europe trekking to California to see him. In a 2008 issue of Italian men’s Vogue, L’uomo Vogue, an article on design leaders featured a dapper, ascot-wearing Klein as an architect of the face, alongside more traditional architecture masters including Frank Gehry.

Often dressed in black, Klein is fond of such eye-catching jewelry as his Rolex watch decorated with diamond-and-ruby lips, a gift he received from Cher. He looks ready to be cast in a movie about a flamboyant doctor’s adventures among the stars.

Although he’s long balanced the roles of medical heavyweight and prominent physician-about-town, he’s now in difficult — but not unprecedented — territory. In 2004, he was sued by a Hollywood socialite who blamed Botox injections for disabling headaches. A jury found for him and the drug manufacturer.

Earlier this year, Klein sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and alleged in court papers that he had lost at least $10 million to theft and fraud, blaming a former employee and others. DeMatha’s solar panels shine attention on stewardship

To provide an example in teaching students to become environmental stewards, DeMatha Catholic High School is completing the installation of 550 solar panels, Principal Daniel McMahon said.

The panels are expected to generate 30 to 35 percent of the school’s electricity per day.

“The students have a sense of service, not only to do things to make a living but to do things to make living better,” McMahon said.

Quon Wilson, spokeswoman for Prince George’s County Public Schools, said no schools in the county system use solar power.

Installing solar panels will encourage students and other schools to consider and pursue alternative energy sources, McMahon said. DeMatha has about 900 students, said Mary Kerley, assistant to the principal.

The Hyattsville school has rooftops that are in southern-exposure positions, which allows the 230-watt panels to convert sunlight to energy effectively, McMahon said. The panels are split between two campus rooftops and will generate 127 kilowatts of power between the school’s convocation building and its main academic building.

The school once had an environmental course that enrolled only eight students, but enrollment has grown to more than 100 within the past five years, said Rick Reeves, DeMatha’s science department chairman. He added that more students are becoming interested in environmentally sustainable practices.

“It’s easy to talk about these things, but we’re actually acting on doing things for the environment,” Reeves said.
