New jobs coming to Gaston

Gaston County will get official word about one of its next manufacturers Wednesday.

Plans for an unnamed company based in Spain to build in the Gastonia Technology Park have been in the public eye for months.

Using the code name Project Sundrop, Economic Development Director Donny Hicks says the manufacturer will employ around 130 people by the end of its first three years here.

Secrecy has shrouded the name of the company poised to locate in Gastonia. Hicks says only that it falls into one of the county’s target industries: molding, machining, fabrication, automotive or defense.

Deadline near on Memphis plans for solar power

The 4,000 solar panels for the 1-megawatt array would sit on a hillside just west of Ducks Unlimited and generate enough power for 200 homes or 20 businesses.

But the $3.5 million-$4 million project hangs in the balance over the next three days as Agricenter tries to iron out issues that have surfaced with the financing company.

"We've hit a bump in the road and are trying to get it resolved," Agricenter President John Charles Wilson said Friday.

The deadline is not the lender's but the Tennessee Valley Authority's. The project's feasibility counts on a TVA program that pays a premium of 12 cents per kilowatt hour for solar power.

Because TVA has been losing $5 million annually on the program, the agency cut the size of eligible projects first to 200 kilowatts and then to 50 kilowatts.

The reduction effectively limits participants to residential and smallbusiness customers.

But the 1 megawatt Agricenter project, in the works for about a year and a half, got an extension from TVA. The extension period ends Tuesday, Wilson confirmed.

"But not from lack of effort from Agricenter or Shelby County or Sharp or a lot of other people."

Solar Panels Bring Ray of Optimism

The Ledyard school board's Facilities and Land Use Committee is exploring the possibility of installing solar panels on each of the disrict's five schools.

"I was directed to look into it further and report back," said Maintenance Director Sam Kilpatrick, who said the committee made no formal recommendation at its monthly meeting Tuesday.
