Browne and two others were flying for the China National Aviation Corp. during the Japanese occupation of China. The Chinese turned to CNAC, a civilian airline it had formed with Pan American World Airways, to transport personnel and supplies to Chinese forces fighting the Japanese.

The Japanese had been seizing control of eastern China before World War II broke out in Europe.

Kuhles made contact with a man from a small village in China who said his father was hunting high in the mountain in late 1942 when he saw an airplane spiral down at a very steep angle and crash below the summit ridge.

Following much research, many interviews and calculations, Kuhles set out with his local Chinese guides. After several days of intense jungle trekking and dangerous river crossings, the team arrived as a junction of several mountain streams. There the guides pointed to the distant summit ridge of the mountain, indicating the location of the aircraft wreckage, then stated that it was too dangerous to continue farther up the mountain and insisted on ending the expedition.

“Our goal when we started was to find where the airplane crashed,” Willett said. “As far as I’m concerned, that really satisfied our goal. I think Clayton’s ability to find the plane was miraculous. I’m amazed that he really did produce what we were looking for.”

Other family members were also happy with the results of Kuhles’ search.

Helen Cole, another cousin, wrote to Willett: “A combination of exhilaration and profound thankfulness that in some mysterious way Jim has been drawn back into the family circle again after being lost for so long.”

I felt welcome and was introduced to every person there. I was told who wasn’t there and where they might be. I listened to jokes about Autumn Lane being the “busiest dead end street in Dedham” and about their runner-up status to the recent “Best Street in Dedham” contest.

You could tell this was a tight-knit street the way kids were running in and out of each other’s houses and how friendly and excited everyone seemed to be to have “outsiders” there to make them feel welcome.

I remember at our block party last year of Barrows and East streets having some non-neighborhood friends come by and the sense of pride I felt demonstrating to them what a great neighborhood we have. The committee also proposed a track, either around the soccer field or in a separate location. Board member Bill Keene said since funds were available that were not spent in the recent construction project, the board should explore the idea of a training track, which would cost less money than a track that would be used for competitions.

"Now is the time to address it," he said, though he noted that cost must be explored first.

Board Vice President Bill Vogel said those funds could eventually be needed elsewhere and he was leery of spending it on a track.

Memories ride the rails of the HO gauge model train layout in a room of Jerry McRoberts' Charleston home that was specially built for what has been a hobby of a lifetime.

"I've been building models since I was a kid," the retired Eastern Illinois University professor said. And since he was a kid, his life has revolved in some manner around the railroad and the trains he grew up riding.

"My father was a conductor on the Waterloo Cedar Falls & Northern Railroad out of Waterloo, Iowa," he said. "And that's where the magic began. My uncle was the motorman, and sometimes I'd ride with them to Cedar Rapids, see a movie, see my aunt and come back in the evening."

The main line of the WCF&N, an interurban electric freight and passenger railroad in Iowa, extended from Waterloo to Cedar Rapids and north to Waverly.

During the summer of 1943, when he was in the sixth grade, McRoberts said he would ride the Illinois Central's Land O'Corn to Chicago with a boy his age named Dale Higdon, whose father worked in the shops for the WCF&N.,high risk merchant account,

"We'd stay at the YMCA because it was very inexpensive, and I'd drag him to the museums," he said. "I was always surprised my mother would let me do that, because she would never let me go swimming unless there was someone with me, and I was a lifeguard.

"Late in the 1960s, my wife and I decided we needed an addition to the house. Half of it would be a family room, fireplace, and more storage space, and the other half would be for a train layout, with a custom-made desk for working on models and storage cabinets."

The layout built by hand for the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Northern Iowa and Illinois Railroad models contains three control drawers, three power packs and miles of wires, which are grouped together as cables.
