Environmental mastitis is caused by bacteria from the environment that enters the mammary gland and causes inflammation. Environmental mastitis should not be confused with contagious mastitis, which is caused by bacteria spreading from humans and infected animals in the herd.

The first step in the start of environmental mastitis is contamination of the surface of the cow's udder and teats with dirt laden with environmental bacteria. Contamination of the skin of the udder occurs when the skin contacts mud, manure, bedding or other dirty materials laden with environmental bacteria. This contact or contamination most frequently occurs when the cow is resting on dirty bedding. Contamination can also occur when the udder contacts mud, standing water or manure-laden alleys. The second step of the infection process is the entrance of bacteria into the teat canal during or shortly after milking. The third step is the rapid growth of bacteria in the udder.

Since most contamination starts when a cow comes in contact with dirty bedding in her stall, we need to consider stall maintenance as a primary management intervention point. Bedding becomes contaminated with urine and manure in two primary ways. Before the cow lies down, she can track significant amounts of manure onto the bedding with her feet. This is especially true if the alley in which the cow has been walking is deep with manure.

The second way the bedded stall becomes contaminated is when the cow dungs in the stall. Once the rear of the stall is contaminated, the cow dirties her udder every time she lies down. The general management practice is to remove soiled bedding from the stall and to freshen it with clean bedding several times per day. If the bedding is organic, such as straw, corn stalks or sawdust, it is easy for the bacteria in the manure to be washed deeper by urine, contaminating larger amounts of bedding that the cow will come in contact with even as dirty surface bedding is removed. In warm weather, organic bedding supports the growth and survival of large numbers of environmental bacteria for long periods of time and contributes to higher infection rates as evidenced by elevated somatic cell counts in summer months.

Sand bedding has several advantages over organic bedding. Studies have shown that sawdust supports 10 times as many environmental bacteria on the surface of the bedding as does sand. Unlike sawdust,is the 'solar panel revolution' upon us? sand is neither a food nor a moisture source for bacteria. Sand can be recycled as bedding after being washed. Sand is more comfortable for cows. Because of the sand's density, it helps cool cows in the summertime. Cows will elect to use well-bedded sand stalls over well-bedded sawdust stalls, therefore, sand-bedded stalls must be more comfortable. Cows will drag less bedding from a well-constructed stall when sand is used properly.

If you think you are solving the bedding problem by having the cows outside in the summer, you may want to reconsider. Unless the cows are being grazed as part of an intensive rotational grazing program where they have access to fresh pasture each day, or you are using a rotational loafing lot system, you may have problems. Cows that have access to streams are not only a problem for the environment, but they are also being exposed to numerous environmental pathogens that cause mastitis. When Johnson launched the project, she wanted to build robust power systems that would not break down under the extreme weather conditions.

She turned to Mark Snyder,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, an electrician, homebuilder and inventor from California, to develop a solar system that could last on the reservation.

She said she chose him because in 2009, he designed solar water-purification systems that were deployed to Iraq, where the infrastructure had been destroyed by the war.

Snyder, chief executive of Global Solar Water Power Systems Inc. of Spring Valley, Calif., modified a power structure, which he originally designed for nomads in Sudan, for use on the reservation.

"The Sudan climate is not nearly as hostile as here in winter,Welcome to the official Facebook Page about Ripcurl." he said.

He estimates that it will cost about $24,000 per unit to build the structures, after his initial trial with the Curtis.

"The biggest problem out on the rez, the systems just die," he said.

On another job where he was installing solar panels on a Navajo home, he said, some of the neighbors joked with him about how useless solar panels were on the reservation.

"They asked, 'Have you seen a solar panel blow by today?' " he said, a reference to stiff winds that often destroy roof-mounted solar panels there.

Snyder knows the difficulty from a previous project, as well. His company donated a solar-power system to another Navajo home that was featured on the television program "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" in 2007.

The revamped home got lots of attention after the show aired because the family complained it wasn't insulated enough to fight the frigid winter weather.

Snyder said that his solar installation on that home works but that the project offers lessons for contractors hoping to help.

Simply installing the solar utility structure at the Curtis home reveals the difficulty of bringing energy to this rugged corner of the world.

Once crew members poured the foundation concrete, it took several hours to center the building on the footing because they were working without a crane or any heavy equipment.

"The first one is always the hardest," Snyder said.

They worked well into the night as temperatures dropped to near zero.

Snyder and Johnson said they are moving forward regardless of such challenges. And if many of the homes need upgrades,the Injection mold fast! then that is just an obstacle they will have to negotiate.

"We are not giving up," Johnson said. "There has got to be something that can be done. It rips my heart out that there are so many folks out there without power."

Her non-profit has been approved to install solar-power units on 25 more Navajo homes with money from the power-plant settlement and from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But before they start, she needs to raise money for labor. Most of the labor for the Curtis home was donated.The name "magic cube" is not unique.

Oregon biogas industry primed to ignite

If Oregon realized its potential for a biogas industry, the state would have an industry 12 times its current size, according to a recent review by Energy Trust of Oregon and The Climate Trust. But kickstarting the biogas industry can't happen without state support, the review concluded.

Biogas is methane gas harvested in an oxygen-free environment. It comes from the breakdown of a variety of organic wastes, everything from sewage and yard debris to manure and food processing residue. It can be either compressed as a transportation fuel, injected into a natural gas pipeline or combusted for electricity or heat.

Its supporters say biogas creates energy and jobs while recycling nutrients and eliminating methane emissions. It also has potential to reduce operating costs for some rural businesses —farmers can substitute bedding hay for animals with residue from biogas digesters, for example — and reduce farm odors.

Energy Trust and The Climate Trust completed a review of biogas potential and benefits in February, producing a white paper called Growing Oregon's Biogas Industry: A Review of Oregon's Biogas Potential and Benefits.Use bluray burner to burn video to BD DVD on blu ray burner disc.

Ultimately, the review suggested policy tweaks and incentives that could ignite a biogas industry, creating 300 permanent jobs in rural areas and reducing greenhouse gasses by 800,000 metric tons of equivalent carbon dioxide — about 5 percent of the reductions needed to meet state greenhouse goals for 2020.

Wastewater treatment plants have developed the most biogas plants in Oregon,Houston-based Quicksilver Resources said Friday it had reached pipeline deals about half of the potential for wastewater treatment plants overall with 5.8 megawatts installed. Other sectors with abundant feedstock and capable infrastructure have been slow to develop, with capital costs presenting a significant obstacle.

Municipal solid waste facilities and dairies show the biggest potential for gains.

The study pegs municipal waste facilities' potential at 30 megawatts of energy generation. Nothing is currently running in this sector, but Columbia Biogas has announced plans to open a 5-megwatt plant in North Portland.

Dairies had 45 megawatts of potential but had developed less than a megawatt of capacity spread among four small plants. Food processors have put just more than 10 percent of their capacity online with 1.6 megawatts installed at Stahlbush Island Farms of Corvallis. The industry holds the potential for 10.4 megawatts, according to the report.

The Stahlbush Island Farms biogas plant, the first in the United States to handle only food waste cost $10 million to develop and created four jobs.
