To Survive, Netflix 'Must Adapt'

When Netflix,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, Inc. announced news of a fee hike for users of both its online streaming and snail mail video rental, many customers decided to pull their ties with the movie giant, including Starz channel on cable and satellite providers. The reasoning was simple. Too much money was being spent by too many people on a service that was not utilized nearly enough to consider the service a deal.

This past Thursday, Netflix made the announcement of plans to integrate its video sharing capabilities with social media hub Facebook. The addition allows site users to watch videos on either website as well as view what friends are looking at. Sounds great, right? Well, maybe if you are in any of the other Netflix markets—but not here in the United States.

As an important driver of Internet traffic, Netflix must adapt to the changing landscape that is the Internet movie service.

To be fair, it seems some of Netflix's decisions are justified. They are justified in the fact that such happenings are only inevitable if Netflix is in the business of surviving in the end. Perhaps grabbing a hold of those films quicker than competitors is an option. Maybe even premiere some movies of lesser demand on Netflix before they make it to the big screen.

Of course, there is also the problem of privacy and those free sites, such as Mega Video. However, the good thing is they often limit playback hours, only offering you a sample of a work. Non-coding RNA has role in inherited neurological disorder

A team of scientists, led by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, have uncovered a novel mechanism regulating gene expression and transcription linked to Spinocerebellar ataxia 7, an inherited neurological disorder. The discovery promises to have broad ramifications, suggesting that abundant non-coding transcripts of ribonucleic acid (RNA) may be key players in neurological development and function, and could be powerful targets for future clinical therapies.

"The challenge going forward is to determine what they do do, and if they have specific functions. Spinocerebellar ataxia 7 is one of several types of spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), genetic degenerative disorders characterized by atrophy in the cerebellum of the brain, progressive loss of physical coordination ¨C and in the case of type 7 ¨C retinal degeneration that can result in blindness. Many SCAs are classified as polyglutamine diseases, caused when a protein associated with the disease contains too many repeats of the amino acid glutamine. La Spada and colleagues have long studied SCA. In 2001, they were the first to demonstrate that SCA7 retinal degeneration was the result of transcription dysregulation of ataxin-7, the protein associated with SCA7. Following up, they decided to learn how the gene that expresses ataxin-7 is itself regulated.

The researchers found not one, but two, regulators. The first is called CTCF, a highly conserved protein that regulates a variety of transcriptional processes, most notable establishing insulator domains and controlling genomic imprinting. But they also discovered an adjacent, alternative promoter dubbed intron 2 promoter (P2A) and a transcribed antisense, non-coding RNA, which they labeled SpinoCerebellarAtaxia-AntisenseNoncodingTranscript1 or SCAANT1.

Antisense RNA is single-stranded ribonucleic acid whose primary function appears to be as an inhibitor or suppressor of a gene, though sometimes it can promote gene expression instead. When they investigated how CTCF regulated ataxin-7 gene expression in transgenic mice, they discovered that CTCF promotes the production of SCAANT1 which in turn represses the newly discovered ataxin-7 sense promoter P2A. In mice lacking SCAANT1, sense promoter P2A is de-repressed, allowing a mutant ataxin-7 gene to be expressed, resulting in mice with a version of SCA7. The scientists found a similar lack of antisense SCAANT1 in the fibroblasts and white blood cells taken from human patients with SCA7, implicating deregulation of this pathway in the disease process.

As many inherited neurological disorders are now known to exhibit such overlapping "bidirectional" transcription, the findings in SCA7 could shed light on similar abnormalities with non-coding RNA function in a number of brain diseases.

Oregon biogas industry primed to ignite

If Oregon realized its potential for a biogas industry, the state would have an industry 12 times its current size, according to a recent review by Energy Trust of Oregon and The Climate Trust. But kickstarting the biogas industry can't happen without state support, the review concluded.

Biogas is methane gas harvested in an oxygen-free environment. It comes from the breakdown of a variety of organic wastes, everything from sewage and yard debris to manure and food processing residue. It can be either compressed as a transportation fuel, injected into a natural gas pipeline or combusted for electricity or heat.

Its supporters say biogas creates energy and jobs while recycling nutrients and eliminating methane emissions. It also has potential to reduce operating costs for some rural businesses —farmers can substitute bedding hay for animals with residue from biogas digesters, for example — and reduce farm odors.

Municipal solid waste facilities and dairies show the biggest potential for gains.

The study pegs municipal waste facilities' potential at 30 megawatts of energy generation. Nothing is currently running in this sector, but Columbia Biogas has announced plans to open a 5-megwatt plant in North Portland.

Dairies had 45 megawatts of potential but had developed less than a megawatt of capacity spread among four small plants. Food processors have put just more than 10 percent of their capacity online with 1.6 megawatts installed at Stahlbush Island Farms of Corvallis. The industry holds the potential for 10.4 megawatts, according to the report.

The Stahlbush Island Farms biogas plant, the first in the United States to handle only food waste cost $10 million to develop and created four jobs.
