The interior design is what you would expect given the exterior styling – bold, sporty and luxurious. Low roofline notwithstanding, the panoramic glass roof admits plenty of ambient light and dispels any fears of claustrophobia. The instruments are logically placed and, thankfully, not concept-car weird. Let’s face it: There’s no such thing as a perfect organizational structure. In today’s environment, trying to get ever-changing functions, products, geographies, technologies, and markets to all line up is about as likely as solving a constantly moving Rubik’s Cube puzzle. However as lease times were shortened and new models were introduced more frequently, the backlog of used equipment grew dramatically. Artist upsets animal rights community with chicken project

Then there are the by-now de rigueur tales of nights lost at Studio 54 and drug-fueled dinner parties. This is coupled with the expected crash, caused by both overextension (those late nights made it hard to keep up with work) and overexpansion. (Though Halston's cheaper line for J.C. Penny was ridiculed at the time, it just showed him to be a couple decades ahead of his time; these days, he would do just fine at Target.) The end is a whimper.

Hofmann's build accidental dynasty

The Munich-born brothers had left Germany in pursuit of change and adventure, embarking on the MV Aurelia with 1300 other assisted migrants bound for Sydney and the Bonegilla migrant centre when the vessel stopped over in Fremantle in 1959.

Johann, who goes by John nowadays, recalls that a superintendent from the now-defunct Chamberlain tractor factory in Welshpool came aboard seeking toolmakers. The Hofmanns and one other disembarked.

"We never intended to stay. We were going to wait two years, learn a lot, see a lot, have a lot of fun and go back (to Germany)," the 73-year-old says. Apart from short interludes back in Europe, he and his younger brother have been in WA since, building a visible legacy in one of the State's biggest family businesses.

Bassendean-based Hofmann Engineering has about 600 employees in WA, Victoria, Canada, Chile and India and turns over more than $130 million a year. More than half the revenue is drawn from export markets, including Germany. Forward orders for the next 18 months stand at $120 million.

The award-winning firm uses computer design technology to turn out products, including high-tech precision tools, valves and pumps, bearings, food packaging and aerospace parts, but its growth of late has been built on producing and refurbishing high-precision gearing for mining and mineral processing plants and wind turbines. Some of the gears are the biggest made in the southern hemisphere, measuring up to 15m in diameter and weighing more than 100 tonnes.

Three generations of the Hofmanns now work in the business, including both of John's sons, Erich J Hofmann, who succeeded his father as managing director eight years ago, and Mark, a metallurgical technician, as well as Erich Sr's daughter, Monika, an accountant who works with Hofmann's finance team.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard visited Hofmann's headquarters during CHOGM in October, holding the company up as an example for Australian industry. "Other sections of manufacturing would do well to look at the track record of this place, how it has stayed at the forefront of research and development, how it has met its customers' needs and how it has been investing in skills and training every step of the way," she said.

John stayed six months at Chamberlain before heading north to BHP's iron ore mine at Cockatoo Island, off the Kimberley coast. He stayed four years all up, in between marrying his fiancee Karin on her arrival from Germany. Cookatoo Island enabled him to accumulate a nest egg and gain an insight into mining but its isolation also meant that he quickly learnt to "improvise and compromise" to ensure equipment was returned to service.

By then, he and his brother were laying the groundwork to build a precision engineering business in WA. As part of the learning curve, they returned to Germ any for two years in the late 1960s.

J & E Hofmann Pty Ltd began in Erich's backyard in Dianella in 1969, picking up its first work from Chamberlain. It moved to its Alice Street premises in Bassendean soon after, taking up three acres. It now has 13ha, having progressively bought neighbouring land.

Among its first employees was current technical director Leighton White, who joined the business 40 years ago.

Hofmann Engineering's growth has been particularly sharp over the past decade, with Erich J significantly ramping up the company's gearing business and establishing manufacturing beachheads on the east coast and overseas.

Wherever the company goes next, both father and son insist debt will play no part in its growth. Hofmann Engineering is debt free, the founding brothers having eschewed dividends over the past 40 years in favour of reinvesting their profits into capital equipment.

Some uncertainty, however, surrounds succession, which has proved a thorny and decisive issue in many family companies. For more than a decade, Suze Orman has exhorted her viewers on CNBC to spend less than they earn, flashed her blazing smile from the covers of best-selling books and endorsed the occasional auto loan provider and brokerage firm.

Never before, however, has she built a financial product from scratch and urged her considerable number of fans to use it frequently. That changes with the introduction on Monday of her Approved card, which works a lot like a bank debit card but does not come with a checking account. It is a prepaid debit card, and companies that offer similar cards have drawn criticism for sky-high fees and poor disclosure.

The hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, American Express and the Kardashian sisters are among those who have piled in with their own cards, and they are nearly ubiquitous at drugstores and other retailers. The target customers are most often people who have little credit history — or credit so bad that banks will not come near them.

Ms. Orman seeks to broaden the debit card market by charging low fees and offering new services, including unlimited access to credit reports. She has put more than $1 million of her own money into the venture and is prepared to add more, since the product may not break even right away. But her move also raises so many questions that it is hard to even know where to start.

How can the Approved card make money charging fees on par with those on Walmart’s cut-rate MoneyCard,Information on useful yeasts and moulds, while also paying a credit bureau for access to its services? Also, can it really be just fine with CNBC, where Ms. Orman has a weekly show, that her card will compete with products from companies she discusses frequently with viewers? Their choice to use it may be colored by the opportune moment in which Ms. Orman finds herself. Big banks have offended scores of consumers with new fees and account balance minimums. People seeking alternatives may well find what they are looking for in prepaid cards.

That might not have been the case several years ago, when most prepaid card issuers marketed them to teenagers, or as gifts, or to people with poor credit who needed a way to make online purchases or visit a merchant without wads of cash.

More recently, companies like Green Dot (a partner with Walmart) and NetSpend have emerged. They persuade consumers to buy the cards first, in part through their availability in 300,000 locations, including grocery and convenience stores, according to the Mercator Advisory Group. Then, they try to persuade people to reuse them. Services like direct deposit and online bill payment have helped some. Still, 43 percent of the cards are never reloaded or are reloaded only once, according to Mercator.

These cards differ from checking accounts in other ways. There is no checkbook, nor do they have their own network of A.T.M.’s, though some prepaid card issuers have agreements with networks to offer free withdrawals. And different regulators govern them, which can mean fewer consumer protections under certain circumstances.

The biggest difference from a regular bank account, however, is the fee structure on the debit cards. Prepaid-card holders must often pay to buy the card and put money on it. There is often a monthly fee. Bill paying, phone help — even making a purchase can cost a dollar or two.

Ms. Orman watched this unfold and vowed to build something better. The real question is whether any debit card can help a cardholder become more creditworthy. The three major credit bureaus — TransUnion, Equifax and Experian — generally do not use debit card spending data to determine whether someone is qualified for loans.

So she has persuaded TransUnion to collect spending data from Approved card customers. What is worrying me today is that I have to submit an “Artist’s Statement” for this event, and it’s been a struggle.

It turns out that the only thing less pleasant than reading an artist statement is attempting to write a decent artist statement. It’s ridiculously challenging to put into words why one is moved to create art or the thought processes that are expressed in a particular set of artistic pieces.

Inevitably the writing is either too florid:

“Shortly before my third birthday, my mother became gravely ill with lupus, a chronic and debilitating illness. It follows that the most central figure in my world was a person whose health was constantly vulnerable. I grasped early on a sense of how fleeting life is.

“When I was 12, I received my first camera as a Christmas gift. Then as now, taking pictures was about preserving memories and freezing images.

“I remember realizing long ago that while the people I love will not always be around, I can cherish the photographs I have taken of them. Photos became a source of comfort in the face of permanent separation.

Japan scientists hope slime holds intelligence key

A brainless, primeval organism able to navigate a maze might help Japanese scientists devise the ideal transport network design. Not bad for a mono-cellular being that lives on rotting leaves.

Amoeboid yellow slime mold has been on Earth for thousands of years, living a distinctly un-hi-tech life, but, say scientists, it could provide the key to designing bio-computers capable of solving complex problems.

Toshiyuki Nakagaki, a professor at Future University Hakodate says the organism, which he cultivates in petri dishes, "organises" its cells to create the most direct root through a maze to a source of food.

"Humans are not the only living things with information-processing abilities," said Nakagaki in his laboratory in Hakodate on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido.

He hopes these slime mold networks will be used in future designs of new transport systems or electric transmission lines that need to incorporate detours to get around power outages.

Masashi Aono, a researcher at Riken,This page contains information about molds, a natural science research institute based in Saitama, says his project aims to examine the mechanism of the human brain and eventually duplicate it with slime molds.

"I'm convinced that studying the information-processing capabilities of lower organisms may lead to an understanding of the human brain system," Aono said. "That's my motivation and ambition as a researcher."

Aono says that among applications of so-called "slime mold neuro-computing" is the creation of new algorithm or software for computers modelled after the methods slime molds use when they form networks.

President Cristina Kirchner's emergency surgery for thyroid cancer puts a spotlight on her vice president, Amado Boudou, a guitar-playing former economy minister who will run the country for at least three weeks in January during her hospitalization and convalescence.

In the campaign leading up to Mrs. Kirchner's landslide October re-election, the telegenic Mr. Boudou's penchant for partying with rock stars and other celebrities often overshadowed his policy ideas.

But analysts say the leftist Mrs. Kirchner brought Mr. Boudou onto the ticket precisely because he lacked the political heft within the ruling Peronist party to emerge as a potential rival to her. Now that Mrs. Kirchner will be forced to retreat from the political stage for at least a few weeks after surgery next Wednesday, she is probably relieved to have chosen Mr. Boudou, analysts say.

Earlier this year, after she announced her plans to run for a second term, Mrs. Kirchner said the main reason she picked Mr. Boudou as her running mate, over some powerful Peronist governors, was his "loyalty."

Most medical experts consider the 58-year-old Mrs. Kirchner's prognosis to be good, and investors and politicians seemed to be calmly assimilating the announcement of the president's illness late Tuesday.

A vibrant-looking Mrs. Kirchner appeared Wednesday at an event with provincial governors and joked with Mr. Boudou, 48, about the responsibilities he was about to assume.

"Look at how important it is that the vice president thinks the same way as the person who has been chosen to guide the destiny of the country," she said. Then, amid laughter from the audience, Mrs. Kirchner looked toward Mr. Boudou and added: "Watch what you do!"

In Argentina, Mr. Boudou and his girlfriend, Agustina Kampfer, a television journalist, get paparazzi treatment from the media, which consider them one of the country's most glamorous couples. Mr. Boudou is known for tooling around on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and for collecting electric guitars.

Mr. Boudou's fun-loving ways have sometimes raised eyebrows in government circles, and Mrs. Kirchner hasn't hesitated to keep her No. 2 in his place. During a recent political event, Mrs. Kirchner wryly referred to Mr. Boudou as a "rich kid from Puerto Madero," an elegant part of the capital.

According to Argentine political columnists, Mrs. Kirchner's son, Maximo, one of her key political advisers, and some of the more ideological leftists in the government are still distrustful of Mr. Boudou. In part, that is because Mr. Boudou was educated and later taught at the Argentine Center for Macroeconomic Studies, a university identified with free-market thinking.

Mr. Boudou, however, proved his bona fides to many on the Argentine left in 2008 when he was serving as head of the state pension system and backed Mrs. Kirchner's initiative to nationalize a parallel system of private pensions. Later, as finance minister, Mr. Boudou helped craft a controversial 2009 plan to use several billion dollars in central-bank reserves to pay debt.

The government didn't anticipate the stiff resistance the proposal sparked from Congress and then-Central Bank President Martin Redrado, whom Mrs. Kirchner eventually ousted. Mr. Redrado subsequently wrote that Mr. Boudou "is probably the minister with the least technical quality that I've known, but with a great capacity for communication."

An evolution in guidelines for research on chimps

Chimps are about 96 percent genetically identical to humans, and like us they are self-aware enough to recognize themselves in a mirror.

But physically, we show some remarkable differences. They don't get the same kind of heart disease humans get. They develop some of the brain abnormalities associated with Alzheimer's disease, but not others. And despite being more sexually promiscuous than humans, they don't get the same sexually transmitted diseases.
