Make parks accessible to people with disabilities first

All existing parks must be safe and accessible before adding new facilities, the North Muskegon City Council decided Monday.

The council unanimously approved a new recreation plan at its Monday evening meeting. The plan prioritizes which park improvement projects will be funded first, though it is subject to revision.

Making parks more accessible to people with disabilities topped the list of objectives. That will mean replacing some play equipment in the West End Park and installing rubber mats under the equipment, improving sidewalks in the East End Park and improving drainage in city parks.

The plan also included ideas to help fund park improvements, including applying for grants, appointing a committee to keep track of needed maintenance, developing a parks budget and exploring using bonds or a millage to pay for ongoing maintenance.

Other priorities included developing consistent park signs and setting up a schedule for cleaning.

Adding facilities was lower down the list of goals. Objectives there included adding picnic shelters at West End and Waterfront parks, putting telescopes and maps of the Muskegon shoreline in Custer Park, replacing the Bear Lake Park tennis courts,Shop at Lowe's for garage Ceramic tile, extending the Lakeshore Bike Trail down Witham Drive and possibly setting up a park east of Whitehall Road.

Public opinion surveys and observation of what facilities were used most to determine what kinds of recreation interest residents most. Not all public input made it into the action plan objectives, though.

Local volunteers hard at work erecting Holiday of Lights display

Crews and volunteers are working away in Bluefield’s Lotito City Park to make sure displays are up and ready for this year’s Holiday of Lights.

Deb Sarver, organizer of the Holiday of Lights, said good weather and plenty of volunteers have helped crews set up displays earlier than anticipated.

“It’s been going very good,” Sarver said. “We’ve had a lot of volunteers. The weather has held out for us, and we are hoping it will continue to do so over the next couple of the days. Right now, we are just going through things and getting things spruced up a little bit. We should hopefully, by the end of this week, have every thing ready except for some of the smaller things. We are probably a week ahead or so of where we were last year.”

According to Sarver, city crews and volunteers are now mainly working on small but important tasks, like replacing bulbs on the massive displays.

“We’ve been through 13,ceramic magic cube for the medical,000 of those plastic cable ties, and I would say we have replaced 10,000 bulbs at least,” she said. “Even today, we are down here working on the arch display on one of the bridges. We are trying to get things lit up so we can check to see where bulbs are needed or have burned out. Sarver said she is grateful to the many volunteers who have come out to help put up the light displays.

“One day, we had 73 volunteers from Project Discovery in Tazewell County come out,” Sarver said. “We’ve had a lot of Bluefield College freshmen coming in to get their three hours of community service in.”

However, Sarver said the Holiday of Lights is still looking for volunteers to work the gate during the event.

“Melanie Farmer with the city of Bluefield is taking names for people who want to work the gate,” she said. “We start up Thanksgiving night, a week from Thursday. We are always looking for people to work the gate. You get to take donations and hand out the candy. Usually, the first timers who are working on the gate talk about the wonderful time they’ve had. Most of the time, people get hooked working the gate. People are happy going in, but they are even happier when they come out. You get to see people having a great time and get to meet friends who are out and about. It’s all for a good cause.”

This year, the Holiday of Lights will be taking pet food to donate to local shelters as well as canned food donations on Thanksgiving nights. Visitors can also contribute monetary donations to make sure the Holiday of Lights keeps shining bright.

“The first night on Thanksgiving night we always take canned food for local food pantries,Polycore oil paintings for sale are manufactured as a single sheet,” Sarver said. “If people want to, they can also bring dog and pet food donations for animals at the Mercer County Animal Shelter as well. The shelter needs food all the time as well. They can also give a monetary donation to help keep the Holiday of Lights running. Sarver said she is most looking forward to flipping the switch and lighting up the park for the first time on Thanksgiving night.

“It is a delight to turn on the lights and to see that line of cars waiting on Thanksgiving night,” she said. “The whole thing is so exciting. It just makes everything worthwhile.”

The Holiday of Lights will run from Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24 through New Year’s Day. The event will be open Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

1 A 46-year-old Westland man is arrested after Northville Township police found him passed out and slumped over in his car, which was still in the roadway.

Larceny from a vehicle

2 A Northville woman reported to police that $100 was taken from her van while it was parked outside her home on Clement Road.

The woman's husband said on July 28 he noticed the interior light on in the van, so he looked outside and saw an unknown suspect running from the van. The cash was taken from the unlocked van's center console.

There is no description of the suspect.

Stolen jockey statue

3 Sometime between the dates of July 24 through the 27th a jockey statue was stolen from Northville Downs.Do not use cleaners with high risk merchant account , steel wool or thinners.

Northville city police were dispatched to the Coldspring Drive neighborhood on the report of a man going door to door seeking money. The police found him at a home on Coldspring. The Salt Lake City resident said he was collecting donations that would be going toward care packages for soldiers.

The man showed an identification that stated he was working for United Freedom Sales. However, the man said he did not have the proper permit or license for such activity in the City of Northville.
